Despite what I do for a living I still believe that when it comes to team sport the endless quest for greater levels of strength and increased speed will only ever be as good and as useful as the ability to problem solve, adapt and consistently make good decisions when under pressure in a constantly changing environment.

The photo above has nothing to do with this concept, it is simply Hayden doing some split squats after some heavy deadlifts yesterday!

I took this photo a few weeks ago when I was out at Lando got to spend an hour watching and train. It’s special to think he hasn’t stopped talking about it since. Big thanks to and for being so welcoming and generous with your time.

I don’t think Lando quite understood the calibre of athlete he was watching but he could definitely understand how hard everyone was working!

Something I’ve been debating a lot within my own head lately..

The transfer of training and what we do in the gym across to the sports field

- Do traditional means of strength and power training have a greater carry over to sports performance if applied sensibly and in a well thought out program

- The value of trying to create positional context within our exercise selection and program design to mimic the demands such athletes may face in a competitive environment

- If we go down the road of chasing positional context more so than traditional strength and conditioning means how do we continually create an overload principle and be wary of overuse patterns in a long term structured manner?

- How does the integration of such methods and thought processes look in more of a hybrid model?

- Are we as strength and conditioning coaches beginning to step on the toes of more specialist coaches eg sprint coaches by trying to create technical improvements as well as strengthen and power adaptations

I’m not sure if there is a right or wrong but there is definitely a great debate that could be had here..

For the past couple of years I’ve been lucky enough to work with a handful of guys via correspondence in the Tactical Operations Unit in the Police Force. They are some of the hardest working, most disciplined individuals I’ve ever come across.

I always enjoy catching up in person and running them through a new program. It’s always a good session!

Yesterdays session consisted of the following:

A - Plank - Front - One Leg - 2 x 30s ea

B - Box Jump - 2 x 5 - 90s

C - Deadlift - Beneath Knees (low blocks) - Clean Grip - 6 x 6 - 2110 - 180s

D1 - Split Squat - DB - Rear Foot Elevated - - 3 x 8-10ea - 3010 - 60s
D2 - Lying Leg Curl - Neutral - Dorsiflexed - 3 x 8-10 - 4010 - 60s

E - Seated Calf Raise - 2 x 12-15 - 2111 - 60s
