Most people don't know embalmers don't sit around waiting for rigor mortis to pass before they can begin. They release it by hand.

Rigor mortis, the natural stiffening of muscles after death, usually starts within an hour or two and is fully set in by around twelve hours. Instead of waiting a day or two for it to resolve on its own, an embalmer will gently flex and massage the joints, the shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, until the stiffness relaxes. Once it's released this way, it does not return, which is part of why positioning and setting the features can begin so soon after someone arrives in care.

It's a small, physical act most families never picture: someone taking the time, joint by joint, to make a person's final rest look peaceful rather than rigid. If a body is embalmed very soon after death, this stiffening may not fully set in at all, which is one more reason timing matters so much in the early hours.
