What happens to a child’s scoliosis curve when you follow them for nearly nine years? That is exactly what our latest research set out to find out.

We followed children diagnosed with scoliosis before the age of ten, tracking how their curves changed over almost a decade of care. By the end, their curves were on average 21.5 degrees smaller than when they started. And a year after treatment ended, all four curves were still smaller than when they first came in.

This matters because children diagnosed with scoliosis at a young age are often in a difficult spot. They are too young to fit neatly into the research that exists for teenagers, and there is very little guidance on what non-surgical care should look like for them. Every study that looks at this group brings us closer to better answers for the families who need them most.

Scoliosis can run in families. Here is why that matters for your child.

Research shows that more than half of people diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis have at least one relative who also has it. Studies suggest that having a family history may be linked to larger curves at diagnosis. Scoliosis does not always announce itself early, which is exactly why children with a family history benefit from being screened before puberty begins, when curves are still small and more options are available.

If scoliosis is part of your family's story, an assessment is a simple and important step. Book one today by calling our clinic or visiting our website.

Research on non-surgical treatment for juvenile idiopathic scoliosis is rare. So our team looked closer.

Our latest study, published in the Q1 journal Children, examines long-term bracing outcomes in children with juvenile idiopathic scoliosis, a group where clinical guidelines and evidence have historically been very limited. Four patients were followed for an average of nearly nine years, giving us a longer view than most studies in this space are able to provide.

A huge thank you to Rose Mirenzi, Dr. Juan du Plessis, Dr. Jeb McAviney, Nora-Lee Doueihi, Joanna Liu, and Paul Oakley for contributing this research to the global scoliosis community. Tap the link in bio or visit our website to read the full article.

Most people associate scoliosis with teenagers. But for many adults, it is something that develops later in life for the first time, and it often goes unrecognised.

Degenerative scoliosis is driven by natural age-related changes in the spine. As posture and balance shift together over time, the risk of a fall can quietly increase in ways that are easy to attribute to ageing rather than something that can actually be addressed.

If you have an older loved one whose posture has been changing, this one is worth a share. And if you have questions about degenerative scoliosis, give our clinic a call or visit our website to book an appointment.

ScoliCare offers a free, confidential case review service to help you understand a scoliosis or kyphosis case better.

Patients can submit their own X-rays directly, and health professionals can upload a patient's X-rays and case history through our health professional portal. Eeither way, our clinical team reviews it and follows up with recommendations.

Please note that we only review scoliosis or kyphosis X-rays specifically, we're not able to assess imaging reports alone or X-rays for unrelated conditions.

Visit our website or tap the link in our bio to submit a case. Free, confidential, and no cost either way.

A rounded upper back and hyperkyphosis are not the same thing, and knowing the difference changes what needs to happen next.

Postural rounding comes from sustained slouching and does not involve any actual change in the spine's shape. Structural kyphosis does, and it can develop during the teenage years or later in life, often starting with changes in the lower back and pelvis that cause the upper body to compensate.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis develops during the growing years with no single known cause. It is the most common form of scoliosis, accounting for around 80% of all diagnosed cases.

What makes this age group so important is that the growing years between 10 and 18 are also when the spine is most responsive to care. Adolescent females are also ten times more likely to need intervention than males the same age, which is why knowing where your child stands matters. Acting during this window gives families the best possible chance of managing the curve well and keeping more options available down the track.

The earlier scoliosis is understood, the more empowered you are to make the right decisions for your child. Call our clinic or tap the link in bio to book an assessment with our team.

Getting a good night's sleep in a scoliosis brace takes some adjusting, but it gets easier, and these small changes can make a real difference from the very first night.

The right pyjamas, a little skin care before bed, and a few pillow adjustments can go a long way toward making brace wear at night feel far more manageable. And like most things with scoliosis care, consistency is what pays off. The more nights you stick with it, the more natural it becomes.

Swipe through for the full list of tips, and if you have questions about brace wear or comfort, our team is always happy to help. Tap the link in bio to get in touch.

Sometimes scoliosis starts with something you almost dismiss, but they are often the body's earliest way of signaling that something is shifting in the spine. And noticing them early is exactly what keeps more options on the table.

If something has caught your attention, trust that instinct. Save this for your next appointment or share it with someone who might need it.

New Blog Post!

One of our guest speakers Dr. Nick Gentile will be discussing which red flags to look for when assessing Scoliosis. Dr Nick Gentile is a trained and registered Chiropractor with a passion for supporting the developing spine through the adolescent years. With a history in sports Chiropractic and a love for improving Biomechanics through rehab, it was a natural fit for him to to focus exclusively on the development and non-surgical treatment of scoliosis and Hyperkyphosis.

We have another excellent video to share courtesy of our ScoliCare Exercise Physiologists. This time we are focusing on strengthening the muscles that help stabilise the spine. These are beneficial for building a strong foundation, improving posture, preventing some injuries and improving function.

It is important to note - these are general strength exercises and don't take into account specific conditions. If you wish for more specific advice please come see us at one of the Scolicare clinics.

Feel free to share and tag anyone that you think may benefit from these.

Our Exercise Physiologists have put together a video demonstrating some spinal mobility stretches to help improve posture. Especially beneficial to those sitting at a desk all day but also ideal for those working from home or those who don't move too much throughout the day.

These simple and easy to do stretches are all in either a seated, standing or lying position and can help with back stiffness. However, while they are suitable for almost everyone please don’t attempt if you currently have acute back pain!

It is important to note - these are general strength exercises and don't take into account specific conditions. If you wish for more specific advice please come see us at one of the ScoliCare clinics.

Feel free to share and tag anyone that you think may benefit from these.

We have two brace design competition winners!

We simply couldn't decide on which design we loved more as both had their own special story behind them. In the end we decided to have two winners!

Our first winner was Jessica Hobbs who loves music and explained her design - "When I first heard about this competition, I started thinking about some ideas. The first thing that came to my head was music, because I absolutely love music. I listen to it a lot and I play lots of instruments, I have found that this has really helped me through my scoliosis journey. As time went by, I started to second guess my design, as music is not for everyone. But something kept telling me to draw it. As I was drawing it, I got thinking of how all these music notes remind me of having scoliosis. When reading music its starts off really hard, just like when you get your first brace, it can really seem like a really dark time for some, but as you go through the ups and downs it gets a bit brighter and easier as you know your brace is supporting your scoliosis. Just like this drawing, my music notes start off dark and then finish off bright. It can be the same when you listen to a song or play an instrument, when it starts, you may have your assumptions whether or not you like it, but as the song plays you will like parts of it, others you will not, this can be the same with scoliosis when you really think about it. So, the reason why I chose this design is not because I necessarily love music, but it is to remind everyone it will be OK. No matter how dark things may seem, there always is a light at the end of the tunnel. :) "

Our second winner was Bronte O'Shannessy who beautifully wrote about her design - "Koi fish are capable of adapting to many climates and conditions and symbolise strength. Koi fish show great determination, dedication, perseverance & success. Their spine is a feature of the way they navigate their lives."

These two designs will now be sent to our graphic design team to be converted into designs for ScoliCare's 3D custom braces, so other patients will be able to choose them for their own brace design. Massive congratulations to both winners and thanks to everyone who participated in the competition!
