When did you last look at your Asthma Action Plan?

Asthma guidelines have changed, and your asthma may have too. If your plan has not been reviewed in a while, there is a fair chance your therapy is no longer the most effective option for you.

Our pharmacists are on hand to go through your plan, check your medicines, doses and inhaler technique, and advise whether your current treatment is still doing the job. If a follow-up assessment with your GP would be worthwhile, we will tell you and help you arrange it.

Bring your action plan and your inhalers in this week. Walk ins are welcome, or book your appointment online via our website.

When you have asthma, a cold is never just a cold.

Respiratory infections are the most common reason asthma flares up badly enough to need a doctor or a hospital. Vaccination is one of the easiest ways to lower that risk.

Worth checking you're up to date on: annual flu, COVID-19 boosters, and for some people pneumococcal.

Some of these are free under the National Immunisation Program, and we can give them right here. Ask us whether you're eligible.

Save this one. You may never need it, but you might.

Asthma First Aid, four steps, for a blue/grey reliever:

1. Sit them upright and stay calm. Don't leave them alone.
2. Give 4 separate puffs, one puff at a time through a spacer, 4 breaths after each.
3. Wait 4 minutes. No improvement? 4 more puffs the same way.
4. Still no better? Call 000 and say it's an asthma emergency. Keep giving 4 puffs every 4 minutes until help arrives.

You don't need to be sure it's asthma to start. Screenshot this, or come in and grab a free wallet card from the counter.

The medicine only works if it gets to your lungs.

Most people are surprised to learn their inhaler technique has drifted. It's incredibly common, and easy to fix in a couple of minutes.

Quick check: shake it, breathe all the way out, use a spacer, one puff at a time with a slow steady breath in, hold about 5 seconds, then rinse your mouth if you're on a preventer.

If you're not sure you've got the right technique, bring your inhaler and spacer in, and we'll help to correct it.

Itchy eyes today, tight chest tomorrow.

Hay fever and asthma are closely linked: around 80% of people with asthma also get hay fever, and an untreated nose can make asthma harder to control. Spring pollen is climbing right now.

Three things that help: start your nasal spray early, aim it towards the outside of the nostril, and keep taking your preventer as usual.

Know your triggers.

No two people with asthma have the same list. Colds and flu, pollen, dust mites, smoke, exercise, a sudden cold snap. Any of them can tighten the chest.

Try this: for two weeks, jot down the day and what was happening when symptoms hit. Patterns show up fast, and once you can name a trigger you can plan around it.

Bring your notes in and we'll talk through what to do about them.
