With some new faces joining our Health Connect Shen community, I thought it was time to properly introduce myself again. 🤍

I’m Dr Nicky Macdonald, Director, Owner and Clinical Lead at Health Connect Shen.

I’ve been practising Chinese medicine since 2000, and over the past 26 years my work has included acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, private practice, teaching and clinical supervision.

I’m registered with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia through Ahpra in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Chinese Herbal Dispensing.

My formal training began at the Sydney Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, followed by a six-month clinical internship at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. I later completed a Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the University of Western Sydney.

Over the years, I’ve developed particular clinical interests in:

🌿 Women’s health
🌿 Fertility & IVF support
🌿 Pregnancy & postpartum care
🌿 Menopause
🌿 Pain management
🌿 Stress & emotional wellbeing
🌿 Chinese herbal medicine
🌿 Integrative healthcare

One of the things I value most about Chinese medicine is the opportunity to look at the whole person, rather than simply focusing on one symptom.

Whether you’ve been visiting me for years or you’re completely new to Health Connect Shen, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to support you.

With Google, social media and AI making it easier than ever to search for health practitioners, it can be tempting to simply choose the first result that comes up.

But “best” doesn’t always mean the most reviews or the highest search result.
When choosing a Chinese medicine practitioner, it’s worth looking at things like:

🌿 Professional registration
🌿 Qualifications and training
🌿 Clinical experience
🌿 Areas of practice
🌿 Whether their approach is suited to your individual needs

AI can be a useful starting point, but it shouldn’t make the decision for you.
We’ve explored what to look for when choosing a Chinese medicine practitioner and how to use AI wisely when researching your options.

Hello, I’m Bai Jie Zi - white mustard seed. I may be small and pale, but once crushed and moistened my warming pungency quickly makes itself known. In Chinese medicine I am traditionally used to warm the Lung, transform cold phlegm and move what has become congealed or painful.

That heat is also my warning: mustard plasters can irritate, blister and even burn the skin when used incorrectly. I am a medicinal seed to respect, not a home remedy to improvise.

Do you associate mustard more with the kitchen or the herbal dispensary?

Educational information only. Bai Jie Zi should be correctly identified, prepared and prescribed by a suitably qualified practitioner; do not make a home mustard plaster.

Hello, I’m Bai Ji. Above the soil I flower as a graceful purple orchid; below it I hold a pale, mucilaginous rhizome with a long Chinese medicinal history. Traditionally, I am used to restrain bleeding, reduce swelling and help damaged tissue begin to mend.

Researchers are now exploring my polysaccharides in wound-healing and haemostatic biomaterials - a fascinating modern chapter, but not an invitation to treat serious bleeding or wounds at home.

Did you know that this medicine came from an orchid?

Educational information only. Bleeding and significant wounds require appropriate medical assessment, and Bai Ji should be prescribed by a suitably qualified practitioner.

If you’ve ever searched online for “the best Chinese medicine practitioner near me”, you’re certainly not alone.

But how do you actually decide who is right for you?

Reviews and search rankings can be useful starting points, but there are other things worth considering too, including professional registration, qualifications, clinical experience and the practitioner’s areas of focus.

Most importantly, the “best” practitioner isn’t necessarily the one with the most reviews or the biggest online presence. It’s the practitioner whose experience, approach and qualifications are suited to your individual needs.

We’ve put together a guide to help you navigate some of the things to look for when choosing a Chinese medicine practitioner, including how to use Google and AI tools as part of your research.

The week is coming to an end… take a moment to slow down. 🤍

Before jumping into the weekend, ask yourself:

✨ What do I need more of this weekend?
✨ What would help me feel rested and refreshed?

Maybe it’s a quiet morning, time outdoors, a nourishing meal, connecting with loved ones, or simply giving yourself permission to pause.

Whatever your weekend looks like, we hope you find a little time to unwind and reconnect with yourself. 🌿

What are your plans for the weekend?
