There are many reasons people fall into alcoholism or addiction—genetics, trauma, neglect, a difficult upbringing, or even ADHD and the chase for dopamine.
Regardless of how a person gets to addiction, I’ve recognised two themes that show up (in my personal journey but also those around me, and my clients) that make long term sobriety much more difficult.
They are; feelings of shame, and a desire to avoid.
The shame can be about what was done to us, or about our own behaviours, and the avoidance is a desire to not want to think about the shame (plus other emotions).
Addressing shame and avoidance is an important part of recovery and I believe the earlier the better. As a spiritual counselor and holistic healer, I can help you face this with compassion and without judgment in a confidential, safe environment.
If this is you, or someone you love, please reach out.
PS: I’m also starting a values based support group (hopefully November) for people in recovery. If this sounds like something you may be interested in, feel free to message me privately to chat.
Always in hope
