Spring has sprung ☀️🚲

Our Monday morning bike group is still out and about, with a recent trip to Ballina for a ride along the foreshore.

A morning like this brings together movement, fresh air, routine, confidence, conversation and plenty of sunshine.

We especially love seeing participants build confidence in activities that are meaningful to them, at their own pace and with the right support alongside them. Sometimes progress looks like working towards a big goal. Sometimes it simply looks like getting back on the bike and enjoying the ride.

Our Monday rides usually start in Casino, with the occasional adventure further afield.

We still have a small number of places available for anyone wanting to try something new, meet others and get outdoors this spring and summer.

Proud to share that Beyond Barriers Support has been named a finalist in the 2026 Business NSW Northern Rivers Awards for Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion, with Corbyn also recognised as a finalist for Outstanding Young Business Leader.

This is our first year entering the Diversity & Inclusion category, and it means a great deal to us.

Over the past year, BBS has expanded its presence across the Northern Rivers, now supporting participants in Lismore, Casino, Kyogle, Ballina and Southern Tweed.

As we grow, we remain focused on the same thing we started with: creating support that feels safe, respectful, individual and genuinely inclusive.

For us, diversity and inclusion isn’t a campaign or a statement. It’s reflected in who feels heard, who feels understood, who is welcomed as they are, and whether people have real choice in the lives they are building.

We’re also incredibly proud of Corbyn’s recognition, but on awards night we’ll be there representing far more than one person or one business.

We’ll be representing our staff, our participants, their families, and the community that has grown around BBS.
To be recognised for Diversity & Inclusion in particular feels incredibly special.

We’re honoured just to have our name in the room.

You may wonder what our NDIS supported Dungeons & Dragons groups actually help participants achieve.

For us, it’s never really been just about D&D.

We’re lucky to have two regular groups: our Friday female and non-binary group, and our Saturday all-age, all-gender group.

Over time, we’ve watched participants show up, take turns, support each other, share interests and build genuine community.

One participant regularly brings snacks and baked goods they’ve made during the week. Another hand-crafted clay figurines to represent the party. Miniature painting has also become a growing interest, with one participant taking the initiative to paint one of the minis.

Some of the biggest wins happen outside the group too.
Participants have started catching up outside supported hours. One travels from Byron each week to be part of the group. Some have created their own niche communities and now organise monthly meet-ups. Others simply value having one reliable social space each week where they know they belong.

That’s actually where the story of Beyond Barriers Support began.

We wanted to create local, interest-based spaces where connection could happen naturally, not feel forced or clinical.

The goal was never for someone’s social life to exist only within NDIS-funded hours.

It was to help people find their flock, building friendships, confidence, shared interests and connection that can continue beyond support.

Watching that happen has been pretty special. 💙💛

Both of our current D&D groups are at capacity, but we’re building out three more interest-based groups over summer.

A big job, and an even bigger achievement!

After weeks of planning and organising, one of our participants was ready to tackle a shed full of belongings in preparation for a move.

With some incredible focus and persistence from our participant, we worked alongside them to sort everything into clear groups: Keep and move, donate, tip and important items.

Packing, sorting and decluttering can involve a huge number of decisions. Breaking a task into smaller steps and having someone alongside you can make it feel much more manageable.

This is where body doubling can help. A support worker might assist with structure, talk through decisions or simply help maintain momentum, while the participant remains in control of their choices.

These everyday moments are also part of supporting independence. Building routines, organising a home, preparing for a move and working through household tasks can all build confidence and capacity in daily life.

By the end, belongings had been sorted, a car was packed, space had been cleared and the move was one step closer.

We are incredibly proud of the effort our participant put into making it happen. 💛💙

We’re a little late sharing this one, but it’s one we’re incredibly proud of.

At the Business Lismore Excellence Awards on the 1st of August, Corbyn Johnston was Highly Commended for Outstanding Young Business Leader.

It’s an incredible recognition, but it also feels like the right opportunity to say thank you.

Because so much of what we do at Beyond Barriers Support simply wouldn’t be possible without the community around us.

We rely on the cafés, shops, supermarkets, doctors, creative spaces, community halls and local businesses throughout Lismore to give the people we support places to go, things to be part of and opportunities to connect.
And more importantly, we rely on the people inside those places.

The baristas who welcome us in.
The people at the post office who take their time.
The staff at Coles and Woolies.
Our local hairdressers, bulk-billing doctors and hospital staff.
The small artisan shops, hobby's stores, art workshops, sporting groups and clay studios.
The op shops, community halls and people who create events and spaces where everyone can come together.

You may not always realise the part you play.

Sometimes it’s patience. Sometimes it’s remembering someone’s name. Sometimes it’s giving someone a little more time, making them feel comfortable walking through the door, or simply treating the person in front of you with kindness and respect.

Those moments matter to us more than we can put into words.

They help our participants build confidence, try new things, make connections and feel accepted within their own community.

We are incredibly lucky to call Lismore home and to be surrounded by a community that welcomes people from all walks of life.

So while we are very proud of Corbyn and grateful for this recognition, we also want to recognise all of you.

We see you. We appreciate you. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for welcoming our participants, supporting our team and helping us do what we do every day.

This recognition might have Corbyn’s name on it, but there’s a whole community behind it.

To finish our Meet the Team series, we’re introducing Corbyn.

Corbyn is the founder and director of Beyond Barriers Support. His role sits across high-needs support coordination, employment pathways, service development, compliance and leadership, helping guide the bigger picture of how Beyond Barriers Support continues to grow.

Corbyn brings experience across disability support, employment services, retail management, community engagement and the Rural Fire Service. He deeply values justice and believes strong leadership starts with understanding the work from the ground up.

He takes the time to listen to each participant’s story, understand their goals and carefully build support teams around trust, fit, safety and real choice.

We’re proud to finish our Meet the Team series with the person who founded Beyond Barriers Support and continues to shape the heart, direction and standards of the organisation.

Next in our Meet the Team series is Emma

Emma is the co-founder of Beyond Barriers Support and works mostly behind the scenes across creative projects and practice development. She helps shape the way our team communicates, connects and supports participants, with a strong focus on neuroaffirming, thoughtful and person-led support.

Emma brings lived experience, long-term disability support experience, creativity, education and a deep connection to the Lismore and Northern Rivers community. She is especially passionate about helping participants feel understood, exploring meaningful community access, and supporting creative, interest-based opportunities.

Beyond Barriers Support reflects Emma’s care, creativity and commitment to building support that feels inclusive, flexible and genuinely connected to community.

We’re continuing our Meet the Team series by introducing Cameron.
Cameron brings an inclusive, engaging and attentive approach to support work. He is especially valued in group supports, Dungeons & Dragons, community access and helping participants build confidence in social settings.
Cam has a calm and respectful way of supporting people that makes group activities feel less overwhelming and more enjoyable. He is great at creating spaces where participants feel heard, included and able to join in at their own pace.
