Dovida Tweed & Northern Rivers’ Community Liaison Manager, Leigh Matthews, was honoured to be invited by Social Futures to spend the day with other members of the aged care sector at the beautiful Bundjalung Tribal Society’s Namabunda Farm.

For those of us who are not Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and who strive to do better in the areas of cultural understanding, truth-telling, and trauma-informed care, opportunities like this are invaluable. These rare experiences allow us to learn, connect, deepen our understanding, and help foster stronger relationships within our communities.

Our generous hosts at Bundjalung Tribal Society welcomed us so warmly and guided us through the remarkable food forest, showcasing an abundance of produce including Davidson plums, finger limes, tamarillos, native bananas, lychees, peanuts and much more. It was a powerful demonstration of the knowledge, care and stewardship that have shaped this landscape over generations.

A special thank you to Matt for walking us through the healing landscapes and sharing the incredible work that has been undertaken, and continues today, to restore and nurture this special place.

A heartfelt thank you also to Melissa, Aunty Sandra and Aunty Ruth for sharing your stories, your work and your wisdom. It was inspiring to witness both the literal and figurative fruits of the efforts made over the past 50 years and across generations.

We are truly grateful for your generosity, hospitality and the opportunity to learn from you. Experiences like these strengthen understanding, build connections and remind us of the importance of listening, learning and walking together.

Thank you.

Dovida Tweed & Northern Rivers Proudly Supports the Murwillumbah Parkinson’s Support Group.

The first Friday of each month brings together a wonderful community of people living with Parkinson’s disease, their carers, family members, and local professionals at the Murwillumbah Parkinson’s Support Group.

Facilitated by Dovida’s Community Liaison Manager, Leigh Matthews, on behalf of Parkinson's NSW, the group provides a welcoming space to share experiences, learn from experts, and connect with others who understand the Parkinson’s journey.

A special thank you goes to Murwillumbah Services Memorial Club which generously provides a meeting room free of charge each month, helping make these important gatherings possible.

We are also fortunate to have ongoing support from Melissa Desmond, Business Development Manager at Balance Mobility who has a personal connection to Parkinson’s through a family member. Melissa attends each month alongside Exercise Physiologist Mitch Barnes of Agile Exercise Physiology, with both bringing valuable knowledge, practical advice, and encouragement to the group.

At last Friday’s meeting, we were delighted to welcome guest speaker Melissa Da Silva from Pura Vida Remedies, who spoke about the potential benefits of lymphatic drainage and its role in supporting overall wellbeing. The presentation sparked plenty of discussion and gave everyone much to think about. It’s fair to say many of us left reflecting on how we can incorporate some of these practices into our own health and wellness routines.

These monthly gatherings continue to highlight the strength of our local Parkinson’s community and the importance of education, connection, and support. We look forward to welcoming both familiar and new faces at future meetings.

The Murwillumbah Parkinson’s Support Group meets on the first Friday of every month, and all are welcome. 💙
