I recently had the pleasure of meeting Mr Walter Mikac AM, an Australian Living Treasure and a fellow pharmacist.
Mr Mikac’s story comes from a place of great sadness, after his wife and daughters were victims of the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.
The shooting provoked national debate about private ownership of guns, especially automatic weapons. Walter’s bravery, courage and dignity through the horror, saw him become a leader for reform and change. Letters from Walter to then Prime Minister John Howard that impelled national reform on gun control, a defining moment in Australia’s history, can be read here https://www.nma.gov.au/about/mikac-howard-letters
Walter is also the founding patron of Alannah & Madeline Foundation https://www.alannahandmadeline.org.au whose work we passionately support.
