Dragons appear across mythology long before modern fantasy gave them wings, treasure, and fixed forms.

Their shape changes.

Their function rarely does.

Dragons guard thresholds.

Water sources. Sacred knowledge. Immortality. Gold. Underworld entrances. Forbidden places. They stand at the point where desire meets consequence.

In Greek mythology, Ladon guarded the golden apples of immortality. In Norse myth, Fafnir became a dragon after greed consumed him. In Mesopotamian tradition, Tiamat represents primordial waters and creation through chaos.

Eastern dragons carry a different current.

Chinese dragons are linked to rain, rivers, authority, storms, fertility, and celestial power. They are often protectors rather than monsters.

Across traditions, dragons rarely appear without purpose.

They do not attack randomly.

They guard.

That is why heroes meet them.

Not to prove strength.

To prove worth.

The treasure behind the dragon is usually not wealth.

It is transformation.

Knowledge.

Power.

Immortality.

Crossing from one state into another.

The dragon becomes the test.

What part of yourself must change before you reach what stands behind it?

That question survives in every version.

Dragons are not beasts at the edge of the map.

They are the force that asks whether you are willing to become someone different to pass and in many myths, the people who kill dragons never leave unchanged. 🐉🖤
