Nobody tells you that retinoids are not all created equal.

There’s a whole ladder - and where you start matters.

The only form your skin can actually use is retinoic acid. Everything else has to be converted first. Each conversion step weakens the potency which means the gentler it is, the slower the results.

Here’s how the ladder works:
🤍 Retinyl palmitate - 3 conversions. The gentlest entry point. Good for sensitive or reactive skin just beginning their retinoid journey.

🤍 Retinol - 2 conversions. The most widely available and most popular starting point. Effective with consistency.

🤍 Retinal (retinaldehyde) - 1 conversion. Significantly stronger than retinol, without needing a prescription. An underrated step that many people skip.

🤍 Tretinoin (retinoic acid) - zero conversions. Already in its active form. The most studied, most effective - and the most likely to cause irritation if introduced too quickly.

The goal isn’t always to get to the top of the ladder as fast as possible. The goal is to find where your skin thrives - and build from there.
