One of the deepest things I have learnt — and perhaps, come to remember — through all the teachings, all the learning, and my own lived experience, is this:
Trauma lives far beneath what the eye can see.
Sometimes, the biggest smile, the deepest compassion, the most beautiful words of love and light, and the height to which someone has learnt to reach… can be an indication of just how deep into the darkness they have once travelled.
How much they have felt.
How much they have survived.
How far beneath the surface their story actually goes.
And somewhere along this road of healing, I think we have become so focused on getting to the light that we can forget the sacredness of everything that exists beneath it.
We are told to think positively.
Raise our vibration.
Choose love.
Change our mindset.
Let go.
Move forward.
And yes, there is wisdom in all of these things.
But healing was never meant to become another way of abandoning the truth.
Every tool we meet along the way — plant medicine, breathwork, meditation, yoga, movement, journaling, therapy, energy work, sound, stillness — is simply that:
A tool.
None of it gives us something that wasn’t already within us.
It simply helps unlock the doors.
And behind those doors are not only the beautiful parts.
There is grief.
There is anger.
There is fear.
There is shame.
There are memories.
There are versions of ourselves we buried because, at some point, it felt safer not to be seen.
And perhaps one of the deepest forms of healing is simply the acknowledgement of truth.
This is why authenticity means so much.
Authenticity sits deep within the soul.
In the centre.
In the knowing.
In that bridge between who we have been told to be and who we actually are.
Because every time we reveal another truthful part of ourselves, something begins to loosen.
Another layer falls.
Another piece no longer needs to be carried, hidden, defended or protected.
And slowly, the light doesn’t become something we have to chase anymore.
We naturally become it.
Without force.
Without pushing.
Without exhausting ourselves trying to prove how healed, spiritual, positive or evolved we are.
It simply begins to unravel from within.
Maybe what keeps so many of us stuck isn’t that we don’t know how to heal.
Maybe, somewhere beneath it all, we are frightened of what might happen if we allow ourselves to be truly seen.
Seen beneath the skin.
Beneath the smile.
Beneath the words.
Beneath the identities.
Beneath the armour.
Right down into the blood, bones, muscles, memories and the deepest place within us where our story has left its imprint.
Because being truly seen can feel terrifying when hiding once kept you safe.
But when those layers begin to fall away, something extraordinary happens.
There is less to defend.
Less to prove.
Less for another person to manipulate.
Less power that can be taken from you.
Your energy begins to remain yours.
And there is a peace in that which cannot be manufactured.
A quietness.
A steadiness.
A knowing of who you are that no longer changes according to who is standing in front of you.
So never believe you have to hide parts of your story in order to become the light.
Turn inward.
Become curious about all of you.
The darkness.
The light.
The shadows.
The tenderness.
The rage.
The grief.
The beauty.
The contradictions.
And every sacred piece in between.
You do not find your wholeness by only loving the beautiful parts.
You find it when there is finally nothing within you that you are afraid to meet.
And perhaps that is where the deepest healing begins.
Not in becoming someone new…
but in finally being willing to see, acknowledge and embrace all that has always been there.
