Today is the International Topical Steroid Awareness Day.

Right now, millions of people around the world are being prescribed topical steroid creams to treat a wide range of skin conditions.

Tragically, most are unaware of the very real risks these medications carry. This is the story of countless individuals worldwide who have developed topical steroid withdrawal syndrome (TSW).

TSW is a debilitating condition that can arise from the use of topical steroids to treat a skin problem, such as eczema. This condition can also arise from topical steroid use in individuals with no prior skin condition; such as with cosmetic use for skin bleaching or to treat acne, or in the case of caregivers who neglect to wash their hands after applying topical steroids on someone else.

TSW is characterized by red, severely itching and burning skin that can appear after ceasing topical steroid treatments, or even between treatments. Topical steroids are effective for a period of time to treat the skin condition. As time passes, however, applying topical steroids results in less and less clearing. The original problem escalates as it spreads to other areas of the body. This “progression” is often mistaken for worsening eczema, contact dermatitis, an infection, or an allergic reaction. However, a cluster of non-skin related symptoms also emerge, constituting a syndrome — not solely a skin condition. To find out more about TSW visit: www.itsan.org

So great that more research is being done in this area.. we need updated information, awareness and clinical guidelines to minimise side effects and help prevent TSW.

If you have been affected by TSW, now’s the chance to speak up and be counted..

Last month, the CDC reviewed our TSW diagnostic code proposal for implementation within the US health system. A TSW specific diagnostic code would enable clear reporting, tracking of prevalence, promoting needed research and providing better insurance coverage and support for patients.

Due to the ongoing controversy around the condition within the medical establishment, this was the 3rd review we've had in the past 1 1/2 yrs with the CDC’s review board. In fact, after its presentation this past time, representatives from the American Academy of Pediatrics openly opposed its addition before the board.

It's critical that our community shows up to let the CDC know how critical this approval is in helping end TSW and support suffering individuals. Once this code is approved in the US, it will be lot easier to get added to the WHO's ICD-11 code list, which will benefit our global community.

Once you’ve edited the letter, you will need to email it to the address included within the body of the template. Letters will be accepted until Nov. 10th.
