πŸ’œ Post-Surgical Recovery: Good, Better & Best πŸ’œ

One of the most common questions we get at Elegance Lymphatic Care is:
"When should I start post-surgical lymphatic treatment?"
The answer is often simpler than people think..

There is a Good, Better, and Best approach to post-surgical recovery.

πŸ’œ GOOD: Wait Until You Feel Uncomfortable
Many people wait until they are experiencing significant swelling, tightness, pain, fibrosis, or restricted movement before seeking treatment.
While some support is always better than none, waiting can allow swelling, scar tissue restrictions, and fibrosis to become more established.
At this stage, treatment is often focused on managing issues that may have been reduced with earlier intervention.

πŸ’œ BETTER: Follow a Structured Post-Operative Recovery Plan
A proactive recovery plan may include:
πŸ‘ 3 treatments per week for the first 2 weeks
πŸ‘ 2 treatments per week for the following 2 weeks
πŸ‘ Weekly treatments as healing progresses
πŸ‘ Fortnightly treatments during the tissue remodeling phase
πŸ‘ Monthly support as required
Many people are surprised to learn that healing continues long after the incisions have closed.
Scar maturation, tissue remodeling, and lymphatic recovery can continue for up to 12 months following surgery.
Consistent support during this period may help:
πŸ‘Œ Reduce swelling
πŸ‘Œ Improve comfort and mobility
πŸ‘Œ Minimise fibrosis development
πŸ‘Œ Improve scar tissue mobility
πŸ‘Œ Support optimal healing outcomes

πŸ’œ BEST: Prepare Before Surgery & Continue Care Afterwards
The best outcomes often begin before surgery even takes place.
Pre-operative sessions allow us to:
πŸ’ͺ Assess tissue mobility
πŸ’ͺ Address myofascial restrictions
πŸ’ͺ Support healthy lymphatic flow
πŸ’ͺ Optimise tissue health
πŸ’ͺPerform Manual Lymphatic Drainage prior to surgery.

By preparing the body beforehand and following a structured recovery plan afterward, you create the best possible environment for healing.
This approach may help support:
πŸ’œ Reduced swelling
πŸ’œ Reduced fibrosis
πŸ’œ Improved scar mobility
πŸ’œ Greater comfort during recovery
πŸ’œ Enhanced tissue healing

At Elegance Lymphatic Care, we are passionate about supporting clients through every stage of their surgical journey.
As qualified post-operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapists, we provide evidence-informed care designed to support the body's natural healing process following cosmetic, reconstructive, orthopaedic, cancer-related, and medical procedures.
Our post-surgical programs may include:
βœ…οΈ Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
βœ…οΈ Wound dressing and monitoring by an Registered Nurse
βœ…οΈ Low-Level Laser Therapy
βœ…οΈ Hivamat Deep Oscillation Therapy
βœ…οΈ Compression Garment Assessment & Fitting
βœ…οΈ Neuromuscular Lymphatic Taping
βœ…οΈ Scar & Fibrosis Management
βœ…οΈ Recovery Education & Support
Whether you start before surgery, immediately after surgery, or somewhere in between, our goal remains the same:
πŸ’œ To help your body heal as efficiently, comfortably, and effectively as possible.
Because surgery is only one part of the journey.
Recovery is where the real healing happens. πŸ’―

🌿 Lipedema & Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS): Is There a Connection?

Over recent years, healthcare professionals and researchers have become increasingly interested in the relationship between Lipedema and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).
While these are two separate conditions, many people living with lipedema report symptoms that overlap with EDS, leading researchers to explore whether there may be important links between the two.

πŸ’œ What is Lipedema?
Lipedema is a chronic inflammatory adipose tissue disorder that primarily affects women.
It is characterized by:
✨ Disproportionate fat accumulation
✨ Painful and tender tissue
✨ Easy bruising
✨ Swelling and fluid retention ✨ Changes in lymphatic function ✨ Fatigue and heaviness
Lipedema often develops or worsens during times of hormonal change such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

πŸ’œ What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)?
EDS is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders that affect collagen and other structural proteins throughout the body.
People living with EDS may experience:
✨ Joint hypermobility
✨ Frequent joint injuries or dislocations
✨ Soft or stretchy skin
✨ Delayed wound healing
✨ Chronic pain
✨ Fatigue
✨ Tissue fragility
Because connective tissue is found throughout the body, EDS can affect many different systems.

Why Are Researchers Looking At The Connection?

Although lipedema and EDS develop through different biological pathways, they share many symptoms including:
βœ” Chronic pain
βœ” Easy bruising
βœ” Swelling
βœ” Fatigue
βœ” Tissue tenderness
βœ” Reduced exercise tolerance

Researchers are particularly interested in how connective tissue may influence the lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system relies on healthy connective tissue to help support lymphatic vessels and move fluid efficiently throughout the body.
In some forms of EDS, connective tissue may be more elastic or fragile, potentially influencing lymphatic function and fluid movement.
Current research does not show that EDS causes lipedema.
However, emerging evidence suggests there may be overlapping mechanisms involving:
🌿 Connective tissue structure
🌿 Lymphatic health
🌿 Microvascular function
🌿 Pain processing pathway
🌿 Chronic inflammation
🌿 Why Does This Matter?
Understanding these overlapping conditions may help healthcare professionals:
βœ” Recognise symptoms earlier βœ” Improve assessment and diagnosis
βœ” Develop more individualised treatment plans
βœ” Better support for patients experiencing complex symptoms

Many people living with lipedema, EDS, or both conditions report feeling misunderstood for years before receiving answers.

Greater awareness helps ensure people are heard, validated, and supported with appropriate care.

πŸ’œ At Elegance Lymphatic Care, we believe education is empowering. Understanding the body, the lymphatic system, connective tissue, and how they interact can be an important step toward improving quality of life and helping people navigate their health journey with confidence. Treating the whole body at once not just the sore leg or arm...

Info on CVI...

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a progressive vascular disorder in which the veins of the lower extremities struggle to return blood efficiently back to the heart. Although often associated only with visible varicose veins, CVI is fundamentally a condition of venous hypertension and impaired venous return that can gradually affect the skin, connective tissue, lymphatic system, and over0all mobility.

The condition develops when the one-way valves inside the leg veins become weakened or dysfunctional. Under normal circumstances, these valves prevent blood from flowing backward under the force of gravity. When valve closure becomes incomplete, blood begins to reflux downward and pool inside the veins. This persistent reflux increases pressure within the venous system, stretches vein walls, and places additional stress on neighboring valves, creating a progressive cycle of worsening venous dysfunction.

Because CVI usually develops slowly over many years, early symptoms are frequently overlooked or attributed to aging, prolonged standing, weight gain, or general fatigue. Common early manifestations include:
- leg heaviness
- ankle swelling
- aching or throbbing discomfort
- visible superficial veins
- fatigue after prolonged standing
- nighttime leg discomfort
- burning sensations in the lower legs

As venous pressure remains elevated, fluid gradually accumulates within surrounding tissues and contributes to chronic inflammatory changes in the lower extremities. Over time, this persistent venous hypertension may lead to:
- progressive edema
- skin thickening
- hyperpigmentation
- lipodermatosclerosis
- worsening varicose veins
- reduced tissue oxygenation
- delayed wound healing

In advanced stages, long-standing venous congestion may impair nearby lymphatic drainage pathways and contribute to secondary lymphatic dysfunction, sometimes referred to as phlebolymphedema. Severe untreated disease can eventually result in chronic venous ulcers, particularly near the ankles, where venous pressure is often greatest.

Multiple factors increase the likelihood of developing chronic venous insufficiency. Important risk factors include:
- family history of venous disease
- prolonged standing or sitting
- obesity
- pregnancy
- increasing age
- previous deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- prior leg trauma
- reduced mobility
- occupations involving prolonged standing on hard surfaces

Hormonal influences may also contribute to changes in vein wall elasticity and venous function in susceptible individuals.

Obesity plays a particularly significant role because excess body weight increases pressure within the abdominal and lower extremity venous systems, making venous return more difficult and accelerating venous valve stress over time. Similarly, a history of DVT may damage deeper venous structures and impair normal blood flow, substantially increasing the risk of chronic venous insufficiency later in life.

Diagnosis typically involves clinical evaluation combined with duplex venous ultrasound imaging. Duplex ultrasound allows physicians to assess:
- venous reflux
- valve competence
- blood flow direction
- vein anatomy
- potential obstruction or thrombosis

This imaging is considered the primary diagnostic tool for evaluating chronic venous insufficiency and guiding treatment decisions.

Conservative management remains the foundation of treatment for many individuals. Compression therapy is commonly recommended because graduated compression garments help support venous return, reduce venous pooling, and limit fluid accumulation in the lower legs. Additional supportive measures may include:
- regular walking
- calf muscle exercises
- leg elevation
- weight management
- avoidance of prolonged immobility
- periodic movement during extended sitting or standing

The calf muscles function as an important secondary pumping mechanism for venous circulation. During walking and movement, muscular contraction helps propel blood upward through the veins, reducing venous stasis in the lower extremities.

However, conservative management does not directly repair dysfunctional venous valves. In individuals with persistent reflux, progressive symptoms, or significant varicose vein disease, minimally invasive vein procedures may be considered. Modern interventions commonly include:
- endovenous laser ablation
- radiofrequency ablation
- foam sclerotherapy
- adhesive vein closure techniques

These procedures are designed to close or redirect blood flow away from severely dysfunctional superficial veins, allowing circulation to reroute through healthier venous pathways. Compared with older surgical stripping procedures, contemporary endovenous treatments are generally less invasive and associated with shorter recovery times.

Chronic venous insufficiency may also coexist with other disorders affecting the lower extremities, including Lipedema and Lymphedema.

The overlap between these conditions can complicate diagnosis because symptoms such as swelling, heaviness, discomfort, and tissue changes may appear similar despite differing underlying mechanisms. In some individuals, multiple disorders may coexist simultaneously and contribute collectively to progressive lower extremity dysfunction.

Early recognition and management of chronic venous insufficiency are important because prolonged venous hypertension can produce irreversible structural changes within the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and lymphatic system. Timely evaluation and appropriate intervention may help reduce the risk of:
- chronic edema
- fibrosis
- recurrent skin inflammation
- mobility limitations
- venous ulceration
- secondary lymphatic compromise

Rather than being viewed solely as a cosmetic vein condition, chronic venous insufficiency should be understood as a progressive circulatory disorder capable of affecting long-term vascular and tissue health when left unmanaged.
