Why Assistive Technology matters.
Mobility is so much more than getting from A to B.

For kids whose bodies move differently, the world can feel just out of reach. Other kids run, climb and explore. They wait for someone to bring the world to them.

Assistive technology can change that.

Research tells us early access to mobility devices supports more than movement. It boosts cognitive, social, language and emotional development too. And the magic is in three big areas:
1. Access. The playroom, the park, the friend across the room. Suddenly all within reach.

2. Participation. Instead of being brought to the activity, your child can join in on their own terms. Move closer. Move away. Come back when they're ready.

3. Peer engagement. Kids learn so much from other kids. Assistive technology puts your child right in the middle of the play, eye to eye with their mates.

Assistive technology doesn't replace other movement goals. It runs alongside them, so your child can build skills and engage with the world at the same time.

Therapy you wear - TheraTogs

TheraTogs are one of our physios' favourite tools in their tool kit. They're an orthotic undergarment and strapping system that sits under clothing and uses soft foam and strategically placed straps to gently guide postural alignment, joint stability and movement.

The nickname is "therapy you wear", and that's exactly what they do. Whatever can be corrected with our therapists' hands in a session, TheraTogs can hold for hours afterwards.

Here's how our physios use them at MTA.

We don't typically prescribe TheraTogs for families to use at home. In our experience, they can be challenging to put on and adjust correctly, and that's a big load on top of everything else parents manage.

Instead, TheraTogs are an in-session tool. Our physios can trial different strap placements to figure out exactly what kind of support your child responds best to. Once we know, those findings inform the design of an SDO suit, which is custom made and far easier for families to manage day to day.

Different tools, same goal. The right pick depends on your child and your family.

Wondering if this kind of support could help your kiddo? Chat to your physio about it at your next session.

Therapeutic Footwear
Not just shoes. Think of them as training wheels for your child's developing body.

Regular shoes cover feet. Therapeutic footwear actively supports, guides and stabilises them. It's like a 24/7 therapy session that works quietly in the background while your child plays.

Why does that matter? Because proper foot alignment does so much more than help with walking:
- Energy savers. Efficient movement means more energy left over for play and exploration.
- Comfort champions. Even weight distribution means no painful pressure points slowing your kiddo down.
- Growth supporters. During these critical developmental years, alignment helps bones and muscles develop in their optimal positions.
- Strong foundation. Like a well-built house, aligned feet give stability for everything from crawling to playground adventures.
- Shock absorbers. Well-aligned feet cushion every bounce and jump, protecting growing joints all the way up the body.

Not sure if your child needs more than a regular shoe? Our therapists can assess foot positioning, gait and alignment, then guide you through the right options.

Book an assessment with MTA. We even have in-clinic demo shoes so your child can try before you buy.

Behind the scenes: measuring up for an SDO suit.

Last post we talked about what an SDO suit is and how it helps. This time, we're showing you what actually happens at the measuring appointment.

Every SDO suit is custom made for your child's unique body. That means precise measurements, plenty of lying still time, and a good chunk of one on one time with your therapist.

We know lying still is hard for most of our kiddos, so we tailor the experience to keep it as stress free as possible. Our therapists block out 90 minutes for the measure session, which gives us room for movement breaks, snacks, songs, whatever your child needs to feel comfortable. Bringing a phone or iPad along can also be a big help.

Here's what to expect on the day:
- We take detailed measurements so the suit fits exactly where it needs to.
- We assess which reinforcement panels your child needs. Trunk for core stability, shoulders for arm function, hips for pelvic alignment, knees and ankles for standing and walking.
- Your child gets to pick the pattern. From solid colours to army print to unicorns, there's something for every kiddo. (This part is usually a hit.)

We handle all the ordering and supplier details behind the scenes.

Measurements then head off to Medifab via Well & Able, and the suit is usually back with us in 3 to 4 weeks, ready for fitting in a regular therapy session.

Think your kiddo might benefit from an SDO suit? Book an assessment with MTA and we'll guide you through every step, from funding to fitting.

Ever wondered what an SDO suit actually does?

SDO stands for Sensory Dynamic Orthosis. It's a custom-fitted Lycra garment that gives your child consistent, gentle compression all day long.

Think of it as continuous therapeutic handling. The same kind of guiding hands a therapist uses in a session, but staying with your child while they play, learn and explore.

Here's what that looks like in real life:

It's like a gentle hug. The snug squeeze helps your child's brain understand where their body is in space.

It builds strength. For kids with hypermobile joints or low tone, the suit helps them use their muscles to stay aligned, instead of relying on their joints.

It helps with movement. Smoother, more controlled, and easier to know where arms and legs are.

It saves energy. Less effort spent on just staying upright means more energy for the fun stuff. Play, learning, connection.

Wondering if an SDO suit could help your child move, play and thrive with a bit more ease?

Book an assessment with our team. We'll work out if it's the right fit and walk you through every step from measurements to fitting.

A note for the caregivers today.

We talk a lot about what regulates your child, but what about YOU? Co-regulation is a real thing. Little nervous systems borrow ours before they can run their own, which means your calm becomes their calm.

So, what does your nervous system actually need to feel settled? Salt air, a warm drink, music, five minutes of quiet on the back step? Whatever it is, it counts. It matters. And you deserve it.

You can't pour from an empty cup. Find five minutes today, just for you.

Long, slow exhales are one of the fastest ways to settle the nervous system. And this little game means kids actually want to do it.

Grab a straw and a glass of bubbly water (or water with a sq**rt of dish soap) and challenge your kid to blow the BIGGEST bubble monster they can. Slow and steady wins the bubble game.

It works because long exhales activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the part of the body that helps shift out of fight or flight mode. Great for the witching hour, before bed, or any moment when big feelings are bubbling up (pun fully intended).

One of our favourite ways to make breathwork feel playful, not prescribed.

Meet your new favourite regulation tool: the peanut ball.

Roll, bounce, squish, press. Kids can lie over it on their tummy, sit and bounce, or get squished between two of them like a sandwich. All of this delivers proprioceptive input, which is the deep pressure and movement information that helps the brain feel grounded and organised.

For a lot of kids, proprioception is THE sense that makes the biggest difference to how regulated they feel throughout the day. It's the reason kids who are climbing the walls often settle after a bit of heavy work, and why others seek out tight squeezes or weighted blankets.

Ask your OT how to weave peanut ball time into your routine. The ideas are endless.
