“Be careful. Don’t lift anything heavy.”
If that’s what you were told after your bone density scan, you’re not alone — and the advice has moved on.
ESSA’s position statement on exercise and osteoporosis supports progressive resistance training and, where it’s safe for you, impact work — prescribed properly, built up gradually, and with your GP in the loop. Bone responds to load. Give it nothing to respond to and it has nothing to adapt to.
Low bone density doesn’t have to mean avoiding strength training. Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists prescribe progressive, supervised bone-health exercise in Cotton Tree, working alongside your GP.
World Osteoporosis Day is Tuesday. Save this for the next time someone tells you to wrap yourself in cotton wool.
General information, not personal medical advice — always talk with your GP.
