You already know you should quit smoking or va**ng.
You probably don’t need another person telling you about the risks.
And if you’ve ever thought:
“I KNOW I need to stop. Why can’t I just do it?”
I want you to know that knowing isn’t always the problem.
Because if information alone made people quit, nobody who understood the health risks would still smoke or v**e.
That’s something I came to understand in a very personal way.
My Dad and I were incredibly close.
When I became a single Mum, he was my rock. He helped me enormously, he was an important role model for my son, and we shared many wonderful conversations about life.
But Dad was also a heavy smoker.
He tried to quit more than once.
He knew the risks.
He wanted to stop.
And still, smoking remained deeply woven into his everyday life.
Dad died at just 70 after years of smoking had taken a serious toll on his health.
At the time, I wasn’t doing the work I do today.
Now, as a hypnotherapist specialising in helping people who want to stop smoking or va**ng, I look at the struggle very differently.
Instead of only asking:
“Why can’t you just stop?”
I’m much more interested in:
What does that cigarette or v**e actually do FOR you?
Is it relief?
A break?
Comfort?
Something you reach for when you’re stressed?
A reward?
Part of your routine?
Something that feels almost like a companion?
Because one part of you can desperately want to stop while another part has learned that smoking or va**ng gives you something you need in that moment.
That doesn’t mean you don’t care enough.
And previous attempts don’t only have to be seen as failures.
They can also give us information.
What was happening when you went back to it?
What triggered the urge?
What felt hardest?
What did ni****ne seem to give you at that moment?
That’s often where a different conversation begins.
You probably don’t need another lecture about why you should quit.
You may need help understanding why part of you keeps reaching for the very thing another part of you wants to leave behind.
I can’t go back and help my Dad.
I wish I could.
But I can use what I understand now to support people who genuinely want a different relationship with ni****ne — without shame, judgement or simply being told to “try harder.”
Because behind every smoking or va**ng habit is a real person.
And that person matters.
