Yep. This is a Speech Pathology session!

This young person has an intense interest in Sanji from One Piece, so naturally, Sanji found his way into their speech pathology session.

And we need to acknowledge Sam’s commitment to the cause here… because she wore this magnificent creation for the ENTIRE session.

At Neuro Flourish, we don’t expect support to happen sitting across a table with a worksheet.

We follow interests and use what genuinely matters to each child or adolescent as part of their support.

And sometimes that means cooking, experimenting with recipes and wearing a chef’s hat featuring your favourite One Piece character!

But underneath all the fun, so much communication and support is happening: planning and sequencing, reading and following instructions, vocabulary, problem-solving, communicating ideas and preferences, self-advocacy, and connection.

An intense interest isn’t something we need to put aside so we can get on with the supports! It can be the way we provide support!

When support is built around a person’s interests, strengths, communication preferences and goals, it can be meaningful, engaging and purposeful.

Support should fit the person - not the person fit the support.

10/10 commitment from Sam. No notes!!!

Here is a personal one from our Director and Founder - Linda!

My whole family is multiply neurodivergent.
So in our house, we have different brains, different sensory needs, different communication styles, different strengths and very different capacities on different days!

Over the years, we’ve learnt that honouring our neurodiversity often shows up in the everyday things - in all sorts of ways!

It’s having preferred foods readily available.

It’s having headphones, sensory supports or whatever else we need at home, and wherever we go.

It’s knowing that listening doesn’t have to involve eye contact!

It’s understanding that being able to do something yesterday doesn’t necessarily mean we have the capacity to do it today!

And it’s respecting “no” even when that “no” might be inconvenient or hard to hear!

None of this means we don’t encourage each other to grow, learn new things, try something different or do hard things.

It means appearing less neurodivergent is never the goal.

And this lived experience is a big part of why we created Neuro Flourish!

We know accommodations aren't “giving in”.

We know what we see often doesn’t tell us the whole story.

We know capacity can change, and accept that's ok!

We know that different doesn't mean less!!!

And we know how important it is for children, adolescents and their families to have people around them who see, understand and value the person in front of them, rather than trying to make them fit into somebody else's idea of what they should look like!

That's what we always try to do at home, so our home can be a place where our family can be ourselves!

We also believe Neuro Flourish should be like this too!

These are 5 ways my family honours neurodiversity!

I would love to hear what honouring neurodiversity looks like in your family!

High school can be hard.
But we are here to help you flourish!

For some teenagers, it’s not about needing to “try harder!”

They might understand the content but find it hard to get started on tasks!

They might become overwhelmed by assignments and assessments.

They might need concepts explained in a different way.

They might struggle with planning, organising or knowing where to begin.

Or they might simply learn better when they have someone beside them who understands how they learn.

Tutoring at Neuro Flourish is different from 'traditional tutoring'.

Our tutoring is neurodiversity-affirming, individualised and designed around the adolescent - their strengths, interests, learning preferences and goals.

Support can include:
• understanding schoolwork, language and tricky concepts
• assignments and assessment tasks support
• breaking big tasks into manageable steps
• planning and organisation
• study skills
• literacy and written work
• building independence with schoolwork
• finding strategies that actually work for their brain and neurotype!

And importantly, we're not here to make teenagers feel like they need to learn, think or work like everyone else!!!!

We want them to understand themselves as learners, discover what works for them and feel more capable tackling the demands of high school.

High school tutoring appointments are currently available at Neuro Flourish with a trained high school teacher!

Appointments in person in Mayfield (NSW) or Online.

Would Art Therapy suit my child?

There's no single type of child who 'needs' Art Therapy.

For some young people, creative expression simply provides a more comfortable or meaningful way to be supported.

For others, art is already a huge part of who they are. And for some, sitting opposite an adult and being asked question after question just isn't how they communicate best.

Our Art Therapist, Kathryn, works with each child or adolescent to understand their individual strengths, preferences, interests and goals and builds supports from there.

We currently have appointments available for new Art Therapy clients.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM, ELIZA!

We are very excited to welcome Eliza to the Neuro Flourish team as our new Occupational Therapy Assistant!

Eliza is currently in her third year of studying Occupational Therapy and has a particular interest in paediatric OT, sensory processing and sensory preferences, along with finding ways to help children and young people participate and thrive in the things that matter to them.

Outside of work and uni, Eliza loves being active and outdoors. You’ll often find her heading out for a morning walk or swim with friends, at the gym, or playing league tag on the weekend.

Most importantly, Eliza brings a love of smiling, laughing and learning, which sounds like a pretty perfect fit for Neuro Flourish!

As an Occupational Therapy Assistant, Eliza will work under the direction and supervision of our Occupational Therapists, helping children and adolescents work towards their therapy goals through meaningful, engaging and interest-based activities.

We can't wait for our children, families and team to get to know her!

Welcome to Neuro Flourish, Eliza!

Happy Speech Pathology Week!

We were absolutely spoilt today!

Our amazing senior OT Jake (who is currently on paternity leave), and his equally amazing wife dropped by to celebrate the speechies on our team with homemade lemon curd biscuits and a homemade card!

Seriously! How lucky are we!

The theme this year is 'Communication creates Possibility' and we absolutely love this!

Communication is so much more than spoken words. It's gestures, AAC, body movements, facial expressions, signs, sounds, typing, movement and more!

When people have access to communication that works for them, possibilities open up for them to connect, self-advocate, learn and belong.

Happy Speech Pathology Week to our wonderful Neuro Flourish speech pathologists, and all the other speechies out there supporting people to communicate in ways that feel authentic to them.

And a HUGE thank you to Jake and his family for making our day (and feeing us!)

Spring has sprung a week early at Neuro Flourish!

Sophie and Linda spent some time getting their hands dirty today, planting our new herb garden.

There were so many sensory experiences to be had!! The smells of the herbs, the feel of the dirt, the beauty of the plants and the pain of 4 green ants bites (all on Linda)!!!!

We can't wait to see how the oregano, chamomile, thyme, garlic chives, parsley, fennel and nasturtiums all grow and flourish!!!

There's only one problem... how do we keep the chickens away?! Hehe
