🌬️ Breath as regulation

Lengthening your exhalation is a simple, science-backed way to support the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of the ANS responsible for rest, digestion, and calm.

Try this rhythm:

Breathe in for 4
Exhale for 6
(Over time, gently build toward an 8-count exhale)

The longer exhale helps signal to the body that it’s safe to soften, slowing heart rate and supporting a return to balance.

It’s not about forcing calm, it’s about guiding the body back to it, one breath at a time.

The diaphragm plays a powerful role in regulating the body.

When we breathe deeply into the diaphragm, the gentle movement of the breath helps stimulate the vagus nerve, a key part of the parasympathetic nervous system. 🫁

This ongoing rhythm of movement and release helps send signals of safety and calm from the body back up to the brain.

It’s one of the simplest ways we can support regulation in real time.

Not by forcing relaxation but by allowing the body to remember it.

We often hear about fight or flight but freeze and fawn are just as important to understand.

Freeze can look like shutting down, feeling disconnected, numb, or “stuck.” Sometimes we keep functioning on the outside, while internally feeling distant or overwhelmed, this is often referred to as functional freeze.

Fawn can look like people-pleasing, over-adapting, or prioritising others’ needs to maintain a sense of safety.

Neither of these responses are “wrong” they are protective nervous system states.

They’re the body’s way of trying to create safety when fight or flight doesn’t feel possible.

Understanding them helps us move from judgement into awareness and eventually, gentle regulation.

3 Core Principles of Nervous System Regulation - Part 3 ✨

Expansion (Integration)

This is the part we don't often talk about.

What does regulation actually feel like?

When my nervous system settles, I notice:

• More space in my chest and belly
• Slower, clearer thinking
• Less reactivity and more choice
• A grounded sense of "I'm okay right now"

Expansion isn't about feeling happy all the time.

It's the quiet experience of safety within the body.

A place where we can respond with greater presence, clarity, and connection.

And often, that's enough.

The nervous system & immune system are deeply intertwined

They are not separate systems working in isolation, they are in constant communication with each other.

When the nervous system is in a state of stress or activation, the immune system can also shift into a more reactive state. And when the body feels safe, supported, and regulated, the immune system is better able to function in balance.

This is why regulation isn’t just emotional or mental work, it’s whole-body work.

Because how you feel internally can influence how your body responds physically.

Safety is not just a feeling. It’s a biological signal. 💛

3 Core Principles of Nervous System Regulation - Part 2 ✨

Connection (Regulation Tool)

Once we become aware of activation, the next step is connection.

Connection isn't about forcing ourselves to feel calm. It's about gently bringing our attention back to the body and the present moment.

This might look like:

• Slowing the breath, with a longer exhale than inhale
• Softening awareness into the shoulders and jaw
• Taking 4–5 steady breaths through the nose
• Feeling the support of the ground beneath you

These simple practices send a powerful message to the nervous system:

You are safe enough to soften.

Stay tuned for Part 3.

3 Core Principles of Nervous System Regulation - Part 1 ✨

Activation (Awareness)

Before we can regulate, we first need to notice.

The body is constantly communicating with us through sensations, emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. The earlier we recognise these signals, the more choice we have in how we respond.

Awareness isn't about fixing what's happening.

It's simply about becoming aware of what's already there.

Stay tuned for Part 2.

Take a moment…

To slow down.
To soften.
To check in with yourself.

How are you really feeling right now?

So often we move through our days on autopilot, pushing through and carrying on. But creating space to pause and notice what's happening within can be one of the most powerful acts of self-care.

No fixing. No judging. Just awareness.

You’re probably on your phone reading this right now...before you scroll on, do this first:

Pause for a second and give your body a different ending to the day.

Try this for 10minutes:

• Dim the lights
• Get cosy under a blanket
• Put your phone down for a few minutes
• Sit or lie down and let your body settle in your chosen space
• Feel your body supported by the ground or chair
• Notice your breath
• Feel your breath moving through your nostrils - cool on the inhale, warm on the exhale
• Notice your mind and the distraction
• Guide your mind back to feeling the support and the rhythmic movement of your breath
• Give yourself permission to let go deeply and invite stillness

Nothing fancy. No pressure. Just a reset.
Because how you end your day is what teaches your body how to rest.
