💊 Why painkillers mask the problem but don’t fix it
Pain relief has its place. We’re not here to tell you to throw away your ibuprofen.
But pain is your body’s signal that something needs attention. When we suppress that signal without addressing the cause, we can end up moving in ways that make things worse, or missing something that’s been building for a while.
Osteopathic treatment works differently. Instead of quieting the signal, we try to understand what’s behind it. Restricted joints, muscular tension, movement patterns, load. And then actually address that.
Pain that keeps coming back is worth looking into. 👌

🥶 Winter is here! A question we are often asked: why do I feel worse on a Winter morning, is it real or am I imagining it?
It’s real, and there’s a reason for it.
Overnight, you’re largely still. Joints aren’t being loaded or moved, so synovial fluid (the lubricant that keeps your joints moving smoothly) becomes less active. Add to that any muscle tension your body has been holding, and the first steps of the morning can feel a little rough.
And if it feels worse in winter? You’re not imagining it. When temperatures drop, synovial fluid can actually become thicker, meaning joints don’t move as freely. A 2023 systematic review found that weather factors including temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity were significantly associated with joint pain. That “I can feel the cold in my bones” feeling has some real science behind it.
The good news? Movement is the best medicine. Even 5-10 minutes of gentle movement in the morning can make a big difference. ☀️

How sleep position affects your neck and back 😴

You spend around a third of your life asleep, so how you do it matters more than most people realise.

🛏️ Back sleeper? Usually great for your spine. A pillow under your knees can take pressure off your lower back.

🛏️ Side sleeper? The most common, make sure your pillow keeps your head level with your spine, filling the gap between your neck and the bed. A pillow between your knees helps with hip and lower back alignment.

🛏️ Stomach sleeper? This one’s tough on the neck and lower back, as it forces rotation and overextends the lumbar spine. If you can, try to transition away from it.

Waking up sore?
It might not just be “how you slept” it could be worth getting checked. 👋

Hip pain can really get in the way of your day, from going for your morning walk to sitting comfortably at your desk or even just trying to get a good night's sleep on your side. If you’ve been dealing with that persistent ache or a sharp twinge, you’re definitely not alone.

We work to get to the root of the problem by looking at how your hips, pelvis, and lower back are all moving together. Rather than just focusing on "tightness," we assess for specific clinical drivers such as gluteal tendinopathies or SIJ (sacroiliac joint) dysfunction.

By easing muscle tension, improving joint movement, and restoring balance to the pelvis, we aim to help your hips feel stronger and move more comfortably.

Whether it’s a tendon loading issue, joint irritation, or biomechanical habits from your daily routine, early care can make a huge difference by helping you move freely now and preventing flare-ups later.

Come and see us to see how we can help! Book in for a thorough assessment so we can get to the bottom of what's going on and get you back to feeling your best.

Why does it hurt more before it gets better?

You come in for treatment, feel great walking out, then wake up the next day feeling like you went 10 rounds. Sound familiar?
This is completely normal, and there’s a reason for it.
When we work on restricted joints and tight tissue, we’re essentially asking your body to change patterns it’s been holding onto, sometimes for a long time. That can create a temporary inflammatory response as your body adapts and heals.
Think of it like a good workout. A little soreness the next day means something shifted. It usually settles within 24 - 48 hours, and most people feel noticeably better on the other side of it.
It’s always worth letting us know how you responded to treatment though, it actually tells us a lot about how your body is adapting. 👌

Why rest isn’t always the best thing for back pain

First instinct when your back flares up? Stop everything and rest. We get it.
But for most common back pain, prolonged rest can actually slow your recovery. When we stop moving, muscles weaken, joints stiffen, and the nervous system can become more sensitised to pain, not less.
What actually helps is appropriate movement. Gentle, supported, progressive. Not pushing through intense, sharp pain but not lying still for days either.
This is why we don’t just treat the flare-up. We help you understand what your back needs to feel better and stay better long-term.
Back pain that keeps coming back? Come in and let’s look at the full picture. 📩

Why strengthening 🏋️‍♂️ AND releasing tension 🧘 both matter

We hear it a lot: “Should I be stretching or strengthening?”
Usually both. Here’s why:
Tight, overworked muscles often feel like they need to be stretched. But sometimes that tension is your body compensating for weakness somewhere else. Stretching alone won’t fix that.
On the flip side, jumping into strengthening when your body is restricted and holding tension can reinforce poor movement patterns and lead to injury.
The sweet spot is treating the restriction and building the strength to support it long-term. That’s exactly the approach we take. Hands-on treatment combined with the right movement advice for your body.
Not sure where to start? That’s what we’re here for. 🙌
