Our mental health system is fundamentally broken and fails the very people it is meant to support.
In low- and middle-income countries, 76% to 85% of people with severe mental disorders receive no treatment. This figure remains high in high-income countries, ranging from 35% to 50%.
Annual global mental health spending per person is critically low, less than US$ 2. In low-income countries, it is less than US$ 0.25. Alarmingly, 67% of these funds go to stand-alone mental hospitals, often associated with poor health outcomes and human rights violations.
