Finding Her Country in a Country that Wasn't

Kathleen grew up in Chatsworth, Durban. She left with her husband shortly after the 2021 looting – the kind of event that turns a long-held "maybe" into an unarguable "now."

What she found on the other side surprised her: "I discovered that Australia was also a rainbow nation," she says, "so being surrounded by people different to me was something that made me feel at home."

Next, Part 3: Annelize, and a gap year that never quite ended.

Thank you to Essendon Baptist Community Church for having us visit their Oasis group last week! πŸ’œ

We ran an information session on Support at Home, and attendees weren't shy about asking the tough questions and honestly, given everything currently happening in aged care, we don't blame them at all. People deserve clear, honest answers about their choices and that's exactly what we aimed to give.

It was a genuine pleasure spending time with such a warm and engaged group and the trivia was a treat!

If you know of a community group, church or facility who'd benefit from understanding their aged care choices and the services available to them, we'd love to visit. And if you simply want your own aged care questions answered by a real person (not a call centre script), we're here for that too.

πŸ“ž Call us on 1300 602 469 or email [email protected] to book a free information session – for you, your group, or someone you care about.

The Wrong Number that Wasn't

Natasha had applied for so many jobs, they'd all blurred together. So, when the phone rang and a warm, familiar, unmistakably South African voice came through, her brain did a confused little loop and it turned out to be the beginning of something much bigger than one phone call.

This is the first in a 4-part series about four South African women, four very different reasons for leaving home, and the one company that became the missing piece.

Coming next: Kathleen's story, and the wave of unrest that made "maybe someday" into "now."

Kicking off the week with some useful Support at Home info ✨

Part 7: Will I get a stranger at my door AGAIN?

One question we get asked again and again. Because let's be honest, nobody wants care to feel like a game of "guess who's knocking today."

Consistency isn't a nice-to-have, it's everything when someone is coming into your home. That's why, wherever possible, we aim to match you with the same Support Worker around 80% of the time. Someone who knows your routine, picks up on the little things and starts to feel less like "a service" and more like a familiar face (who also remembers you take milk, no sugar).

Good care is built on trust and trust takes time with the same person. πŸ’œ

Part 6 of our Support at Home series: So, what does a Care Partner actually do?

You'll hear us talk about your "Care Partner" a lot.

They take the time to get to know you: your routines, your goals, what genuinely matters to you, because a care plan isn’t a one-size-fits-all template.

Their goal is to ensure you never feel like just a number on a spreadsheet. You're part of the Chris Barnard Health family.

Real support, from a real person who knows your story. That's the point. That's care with heart. πŸ’œ

Ever heard people talk about the "Use it or Lose it" rule? πŸ‘€

It's one of those phrases that gets thrown around a lot in Support at Home, and rarely explained properly. Part 5 of our 10-part series is breaking down what it actually means.

Let's talk numbers, but in plain English.

Far too often, budgets and funding in Support at Home get made way more complicated than they need to be. The jargon and top-level terms can stay in the boardroom, what you actually need is a plain, simple explanation. Part 4 of our 10-part series is breaking it down properly.

Watch the video to find out how it actually works. πŸ‘‡ πŸŽ₯
