The wind, the salt, the sound of the waves, the feeling of being somewhere a little wild.

No performance. No productivity. No rushing to the next thing.

Just movement, fresh air, and a reminder that sometimes the best thing you can do for your nervous system is simply get outside and let the world be bigger than whatever is occupying your mind.

HIDDEN ANATOMY — EP. 03 🦴
THE HYOID | The little bone with no bony neighbours.

There are 206 bones in the typical adult skeleton — but the hyoid is a bit of an anatomical rule-breaker.

Sitting high in the front of your neck, roughly between the lower jaw and the larynx, the hyoid is unusual because it doesn’t directly articulate with another bone.

Instead, it is suspended and controlled by an intricate system of muscles and ligaments.

And for something only a few centimetres wide, it has some pretty important company.

Muscles associated with the hyoid connect towards the jaw, tongue, base of the skull, sternum and even the shoulder blade — creating a mobile meeting point between several regions that need to coordinate beautifully.

One of its coolest roles happens every time you swallow.

During swallowing, the hyoid moves upward and forward, helping elevate the larynx and contributing to the sequence that safely moves food or fluid from your mouth towards your oesophagus.

And then there’s your tongue.

Several of the muscles involved in tongue and floor-of-mouth function have relationships with the hyoid, which means this tiny floating bone is involved in the mechanics behind speaking, chewing and swallowing — things most of us perform thousands of times without ever thinking about the anatomy underneath.

Even more fascinating?

The hyoid is remarkably mobile. Its position isn’t fixed like a bone locked within a traditional joint. It changes with movements of the tongue, jaw and larynx as the surrounding muscular system coordinates around it.

So while it may look like an insignificant little horseshoe buried in the neck…

it sits right in the middle of some incredibly complex human movement.

Small structure.
No traditional joint.
A surprisingly big role.

Anatomy is rarely as simple as individual muscles and bones working alone. 🤍

There’s a reason our approach doesn’t begin and end with the treatment table.

When someone comes to us in pain, we’re not simply asking, “Where does it hurt?”

We want to understand the bigger picture.

When did it begin? What makes it better or worse? What has changed in your activity, training or daily life? What are you worried about? What have you stopped doing because of it? And most importantly — what would getting better actually allow you to return to?

Pain is complex. Two people can arrive with discomfort in exactly the same area and need very different approaches.

For one person, hands-on treatment may help settle symptoms and make movement feel easier.

For another, the bigger piece may be rebuilding strength, mobility or tolerance after injury.

Someone living with pain for a long time may benefit from gradually restoring confidence in movements they have begun to protect or avoid.

And sometimes our assessment tells us that chiropractic care isn’t the most appropriate next step at all — and that’s when referral or collaboration with another healthcare professional matters.

This is why we don’t believe good care should be built around endlessly “correcting” a body.

Your spine isn’t something that needs to be constantly put back into place.

Pain doesn’t automatically mean damage.

And experiencing a flare doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve harmed yourself or undone your progress.

We use hands-on care when it is appropriate, but we also want our patients to leave with something far more valuable: a better understanding of their body and practical ways to help themselves.

Over time, the goal is to build capacity.

To move more freely.
To get stronger.
To trust your body.
To return to training, work, parenting, sport or simply everyday life with greater confidence.

Ultimately, we want care to become less about what happens in our clinic and more about what you’re able to do outside of it.

Choosing a chiropractor shouldn’t just be about finding someone who can adjust you.

It should be about finding someone who listens, thinks, explains and adapts care to you.

HIDDEN ANATOMY — EP. 02 🖐️
PALMARIS LONGUS | The muscle you might not even have.

Hidden along the front of your forearm is the Palmaris Longus — a small muscle with a long tendon and one of the more variable structures in human anatomy.

📍 ANATOMY
Origin: medial epicondyle of the humerus
Insertion: palmar aponeurosis + flexor retinaculum
Nerve: median nerve (predominantly C7–C8)

⚡ WHAT DOES IT DO?
It weakly assists wrist flexion and helps tension the palmar aponeurosis, supporting hand and grip mechanics.

But here’s the fascinating part…

🧬 YOU MAY NOT HAVE ONE.
Palmaris Longus can naturally be absent on one or both sides — usually without any meaningful effect on normal hand or wrist function. Its anatomy can also vary considerably between people.

🩺 A SURGEON’S “SPARE TENDON”
Because its long tendon is superficial and generally expendable, surgeons can harvest it for tendon grafts and reconstructive procedures elsewhere in the body.

👀 CAN YOU FIND YOURS?
Touch your thumb to your little finger and gently flex your wrist. A prominent central tendon may appear.

No tendon? You may be missing your Palmaris Longus — although this simple test isn’t definitive.

The lesson: anatomy isn’t identical from person to person. Variation can be completely normal.

Did you know you might be missing a muscle… and never know it?

Meet the Plantaris.

A small muscle tucked behind your knee that around 10–20% of people are born without.

Unlike the powerful calf muscles that propel us forward, the Plantaris contributes very little to force production. Instead, it appears to play an important sensory role. It contains a high concentration of muscle spindles—specialised receptors that provide your brain with continuous feedback about muscle length and limb position.

This reminds us that anatomy isn’t only about strength. Some structures exist primarily to improve the quality of information your nervous system receives.

As clinicians, we often focus on muscles as engines. But many are also sensors. Better movement isn’t always about producing more force—it can also be about improving the brain’s map of the body.

The Plantaris is a great example of how a seemingly insignificant structure can teach us something profound about human movement.

Your brain expects movement. Every. Single. Day. 🧠🚶

We’ve been taught that movement is something we should do if we want to lose weight, build muscle or improve our fitness.

But what if I told you that movement is actually one of the most basic biological needs of the human brain?

From the moment you wake up, your brain is constantly asking one question:

“Where is my body, and what is it doing?”

Every step you take, every time you turn your head, reach for a cup, climb stairs, balance on one leg or simply roll over in bed, your muscles, joints, eyes, inner ears and skin are sending an incredible amount of information back to your brain.

Your brain depends on this information.

It uses it to update your body’s internal map, refine movement, maintain balance, coordinate your muscles, judge where you are in space and help you interact confidently with the world around you.

The less meaningful movement your brain receives, the less opportunity it has to practise these skills.

That’s why movement isn’t just about fitness.

It’s about giving your nervous system the information it evolved to receive.

It doesn’t have to be a gym session.

It can be walking around the block, getting on and off the floor, carrying groceries, playing with your children, stretching, dancing in the kitchen, balancing while brushing your teeth or exploring a new walking track.

The human body wasn’t designed to spend most of its day sitting still.

It was designed to move.

Every day.

Movement challenges your brain.
Movement teaches your brain.
Movement helps your brain adapt.

So instead of asking yourself,

“Did I exercise today?”

Try asking,

“Did I give my brain enough movement today?”

Because movement isn’t a luxury.

It’s one of the fundamental requirements for a healthy, adaptable and resilient nervous system.

Never underestimate the power of vestibular input. 🌀

Spinning isn’t just for kids.

Our vestibular system (located in the inner ear) constantly sends information to the brain about head position, gravity and movement. It works closely with our vision, neck, muscles and joints to help us move confidently through the world.

When this system isn’t working as efficiently, some people may experience:
• Poor balance or frequent trips/falls
• Motion sensitivity or dizziness
• Neck tension and headaches
• Feeling unsteady on uneven ground
• Difficulty tracking objects with the eyes
• Poor coordination or clumsiness
• Reduced confidence with movement
• Feeling “disconnected” from their body during sport or exercise

One simple way to begin challenging the vestibular system is:

➡️ Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and focus your eyes on a letter or object on the wall. Slowly turn your head left and right while keeping your eyes locked on the target for 20–30 seconds. Repeat looking up and down. The movement should be comfortable and should not significantly worsen symptoms. If you have persistent dizziness, vertigo, or a diagnosed vestibular disorder, seek assessment before trying vestibular exercises.

As your nervous system adapts, you can gradually progress to balance tasks, walking with head turns, uneven surfaces, and eventually more dynamic movement challenges…

…maybe one day you’ll be spinning like Eva. 🌀💜
