That after-school behaviour you might find challenging could actually be their way of decompressing after using up all their spoons for the day.

After a whole day of masking, managing noise, social demands, rules and emotions, home is often their safe zone. Some children might withdraw, others might need to move, eat, seek connection, or just have some quiet time. Let’s tune into their cues and respond safely to what they’re trying to tell us. 💜

If your child walks out of the school gate and immediately falls apart, that's not bad behaviour, and it isn't a reflection on you...

There's a name for it. Restraint collapse. All day they've been managing noise, rules, friendships, emotions and sitting still. You are the safest person in their whole world, so you're where all of it gets put down.

Week three of term is peak season. What might actually help is less talking. Replenishing with some food in the afternoon.

Ten minutes of nothing before you ask a single question about their day. Perhaps the debrief can wait until dinner 🍽️

Yes, DIR absolutely has boundaries. Connection doesn’t mean saying “yes” to everything…it means holding boundaries while staying connected, respectful and supportive. 💜

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 "𝗬𝗲𝘀".
Sometimes the most supportive response is a boundary, a limit, or a “not right now.” What matters is how we stay connected through that moment.

When a child feels heard, understood, and supported (even when they don’t get the answer they hoped for), we can protect the relationship while helping them navigate disappointment, frustration, and other big emotions.

A beautiful reminder to lead with strengths, not deficits.Every child has unique abilities, interests, and ways of experiencing the world. When we start with connection and build on those strengths, we create the best opportunities for growth, learning and belonging. 💜

A strengths-based approach means looking beyond challenges to appreciate the many ways Autistic individuals contribute to their families, schools, workplaces, and communities.

DIRFloortime emphasizes building meaningful relationships that support each person's individual developmental journey. By recognizing and building on each person's unique strengths, we create opportunities for growth through connection.

Whether you work in Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Social Work, Special Education, Music Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, or another profession, recognizing strengths is the foundation for meaningful, individualized support.

When we begin with strengths, we create opportunities for connection. And through connection, development can flourish.
