Thank you for the generous donation that makes this research possible.
February is Gallbladder & Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month 💚
Gallbladder cancer is a rare cancer where malignant cancer cells form in the tissues of the gallbladder. Biliary duct cancer (also known as cholangiocarcinoma) is cancer that occurs in the bile ducts (tubes that transport bile from the liver). The bile ducts and gallbladder are both small, but play essential roles in our bodies and are vital to our wellbeing.
While cholangiocarcinoma is a rare cancer, affecting around 1,300 Australians each year – it’s on the rise. The prognosis is often poor, too. Fewer than 20% of people will survive more than five years following their diagnosis.
One of our studies, BIL-PPP, led by Professor Niall Tebbutt, Dr Fiona Chionh and Dr Laura Tam, is investigating a potential new treatment option for patients with rare and aggressive bile duct cancer.
The hope is that this potential treatment option will prove more successful than the current standard treatment and contribute to improved health and survival outcomes.
“As a clinician, it’s nice to be able to say we’ve got this option available that otherwise wouldn’t be,” says Professor Tebbutt.
This innovative study has been made possible thanks to generous support from the Wayne Elphinstone Research Fund and through our GI cancer community. We can’t thank you enough for your support!
