When is Behaviour Support helpful?

Behaviour Support may be helpful when:
• Behaviour is escalating or becoming unsafe
• Support teams feel unsure how to respond
• Daily routines are becoming difficult to maintain
• Communication needs are not being met
• Relationships are under strain

Behaviour Support focuses on understanding why behaviour is occurring and supporting positive, sustainable change over time.

An authorised restrictive practice…
Is not a free pass to use it.

I’ve seen situations where restrictive practices are approved in a Behaviour Support Plan…

But then implemented by:
• untrained staff
• unregistered providers
• teams without clear understanding

And suddenly, something that is authorised becomes…

👉 unsafe
👉 inconsistent
👉 potentially unlawful

Because authorisation is only one part of the process.

Safe implementation requires:
• training and competency
• clear guidance
• oversight and accountability

Without this, we risk causing harm — even when intentions are good.

Restrictive practices should always be:
✔ last resort
✔ least restrictive
✔ implemented correctly

Because how we implement matters just as much as what is approved.

What systems do you have in place to ensure safe implementation?

Restrictive practices are often used…

But not always fully understood.

Across Behaviour Support, there can be gaps in knowledge for:
- support workers
- plan nominees
- families

Not because people don’t care.

But because the system is complex, and guidance isn’t always clear.

This can lead to:
👉 uncertainty about what is and isn’t a restrictive practice
👉 inconsistent implementation
👉 increased risk for the person

Good Behaviour Support isn’t just about writing plans.

It’s about making sure everyone understands them.

Because when knowledge improves, practice improves.

What is neuro-affirming behaviour support?

In the NDIS, behaviour support is evolving.

It is no longer about changing the person to fit the environment.
It is about understanding the person and adapting the support around them.

A neuro-affirming approach means:

💭 Recognising that different ways of thinking, communicating, and experiencing the world are valid

👆🏽 Inderstanding the function behind behaviour

👩‍❤️‍👨 Spporting regulation instead of expecting compliance

☺️ Respecting autonomy, identity, and choice

This approach shifts the focus from:
“how do we stop this behaviour?”
to
“what does this person need, and how can we support them?”

When we work in this way, we move from managing behaviour to supporting quality of life.

We’re proud to share that we are now an approved Behaviour Support provider. 🌿

At the heart of our work is a commitment to person centred, neuro affirming, and evidence based support that genuinely improves quality of life.

Behaviour support is not about “managing behaviours.”
It is about understanding the person, recognising unmet needs, reducing distress, and building environments where people feel safe, heard, and supported.

With over 20 years of experience working directly within the disability sector, our approach focuses on:
• Positive Behaviour Support
• Capacity building
• Collaborative care teams
• Reducing restrictive practices
• Strength based and trauma informed support
• Meaningful, long term outcomes

We’re excited to continue supporting participants, families, support teams, and providers across the community. 🤍

Behaviour does not happen in isolation.

The environment plays a significant role in how a person feels, responds, and participates.

This includes:
• noise, lighting, and sensory input
• expectations and demands
• communication styles
• familiarity and predictability
• the people around them

When behaviour changes, it is often a signal that something in the environment is not meeting the person’s needs.

Instead of asking
“why is this happening?”

We can also ask
“what in the environment needs to change?”

When we adjust the environment, we reduce distress, increase safety, and support meaningful participation.
