Reshare 📻🎙️ What a great show on Sunday! The show was lead by the incredible with a guest appearance from Baby Doc.

We were joined by Professor Andrew Steer who is not only a leading paediatric infectious diseases physician but is the Director of the Infection, Immunity and Global Health Theme . He has just helped secure extraordinary funding towards the development of a Strep vaccine — a project with the potential to improve health outcomes for millions of children around the world.

We also had the pleasure of being joined by Deirdre Brandner , renowned child and adolescent psychologist, author, parenting expert and new grandmother. She is a familiar face and voice of calm on Sunrise, ABC radio and television. We spoke all things children’s sport: Have parents become over-invested in their children’s sport and activities? When does support become pressure? And who is really more disappointed after a loss — the child or the parent standing on the sidelines?

I really enjoyed taking part in The Sleep Forum in Sydney last weekend with an impressive panel is speakers. It is always a privilege to be involved in education. This seminar was with GP’s, paediatricians and psychiatrists discussing sleep issues in children with complex neurodevelomental disorders.

It’s World Bedwetting Day

Bedwetting is more common than many people realise — around 1 in 5 children at age 5 experience it.

With the right support, children can develop night-time bladder skills at their own pace. Check out https://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/bedwetting/ for information and videos on how to properly use bedwetting alarms

Did you know kids aged 2 – 17 years can now receive a nasal spray flu vaccination rather than an injection into the arm?

FluMist is a safe and effective flu vaccine that has been used to vaccinate children across North America and Europe for many years and can be a great option for kids with a fear of needles.

The intranasal flu vaccine is not currently part of the Australian National Immunisation Program Schedule, so in some states, including Victoria, you will have to pay for your child to get it.

Some states are offering free intranasal vaccines for certain age groups, so check your state’s health department website to see if your family may be eligible.

The regular injected flu vaccine is free for all kids aged 6 months to 5 years, as well as certain high-risk groups.

If your child is over 2 years of age, check in with your doctor, pharmacist or immunisation service to see which option may be best for your child.

Most adults with needle phobia trace it back to a single bad experience as a child We have opened the paediatric pathology service at Victorian Children’s Clinic to help solve this problem.

We opened in April in collaboration with

What that looks like in practice:
→ Caitlin, an outstanding experienced paediatric pathology collector
→ Buzzy Bee, a range of distraction tools, and a calm, child-focused environment
→ And we’re now trialling Smileyscope immersive VR purpose-designed for paediatric procedures, with seals 🦭, puppies🐾, games, and even a meditation track from Craig Hassed.

If you have baby, children or teen patients (or needle-phobic adults - including yourself!) who would benefit from a blood test done with expertise, calm, and a focus on preventing pain and distress, please send them our way.

Or come and see for yourself

Loved filling in on a really thought- provoking segment last night called “The shrink & the philosopher”- although I am neither! We discussed Attention- what is it? What has happened to our ability to pay attention? How can we build back the skill of focusing? Lovely to chat with philosopher Patrick Stokes and beautifully facilitated by David Astle. If interested, you can listen back to the conversation here (from 51 min mark) https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/melbourne-evenings/evenings/106656020?utm_content=whatsapp&utm_medium=content_shared
