Sacral Radiculopathy Pain Patterns: Dermatomes & Nerve Root Mapping:
Sacral radiculopathy occurs when nerve roots branching from the sacral plexus (S1–S5) become compressed, inflamed, or irritated.
This educational diagram illustrates the anatomical distribution of referred pain, tingling, and numbness across specific dermatomal pathways.
The S1 root primarily affects the posterior thigh, calf, lateral foot, and sole.
S2 covers the posterior midline leg and thigh, while S3–S5 form concentric "saddle anesthesia" zones around the perineal and buttocks region. Understanding these distinct cutaneous patterns is essential for clinical assessment, localized physical examinations, differential diagnosis of lumbosacral pathologies, and targeted management of nerve root compression.
