💗 Trying to get to sleep while your mind is racing with intrusive thoughts and OCD anxieties can be so challenging. I get it. I created this mindfulness practice to support anyone struggling with sleep, especially those struggling with OCD.

By bringing in compassionate care to your struggles while drawing awareness to the breath and body, this practice aims to support you into a state of rest and sleep - even when the mind is racing. 🙏

💓Wat Phra Yai (Temple of the Big Buddha)✨️ Koh Samui, Thailand

~~~Buddha is sitting with one hand pointed towards the earth - which is all about calm, inner stability, equanimity and awareness in overcoming fear and illusion (Mara).
Mara represents the forces that pull us away from awakening - the spiraling mind, fear, craving for something that you don't have, aversion to something that has happened, attachments, judgments etc.
In Buddhism, Mara is said to become strongest right before the moment of clarity, growth and transformation because that's when the ego structure feels threatened by awakening as old patterns and habits lose their grip. 💓
~~~

"When Mara visits us, in the form of troubling emotions or fearsome stories, we can say, “I see you, Mara,” and clearly recognize the reality of craving and fear that lives in each human heart. By accepting these experiences with the warmth of compassion, we can offer Mara tea rather than fearfully driving him away.Seeing what is true, we hold what is seen with kindness.
We express such wakefulness of heart each time we recognize and embrace our hurts and fears.

Pema Chödron says that through spiritual practice “We are learning to make friends with ourselves, our life, at the most profound level possible.” We befriend ourselves when, rather than resisting our experience, we open our hearts and willingly invite Mara to tea."

💗 Through my Reiki and meditation training, I learnt how the body speaks to us in a metaphysical and spiritual language. Emotion is “energy in motion,” and when emotions are suppressed, resisted or unable to be expressed, that energy can turn inward, circling in on itself at various chakras- contributing to mental, emotional and physical pain and mysterious symptoms.

🧡 Through my own lived experience of OCD, anxiety, chronic pain and (many) physical symptoms, I gained an experiential understanding of the mind-body connection and energy blocks in action.

💛 Then through my training as a MindBody Syndrome (TMS) Practitioner, I recognised there were many of the same insights I had learnt through Reiki and Vipassana meditation... but just explained in a more mainstream and accessible framework.

💚 Now, through studying Psychotherapy and Counselling, I feel like I am bringing all of these perspectives together, in my own way.

💙 Through my experiences seeking professional help, it was eye-opening to see how many medical and psychological professionals still don’t fully understand the mind-body connection, and continue working within a more mechanistic paradigm - where symptoms are often treated as isolated problems to suppress or “fix,” rather than meaningful signals connected to a person’s emotional world, nervous system, relationships, stress history and lived experience.

💫 I love posts like David’s because they speak to so many parts of the healing journey that people can feel stuck in... including the frustration that can arise when medical professionals don’t fully understand the mind-body connection.

🌈 It’s a beautiful way of raising awareness and gently inviting those working with people in any capacity to consider a more holistic, biopsychosocial-spiritual approach to healing and care.💕🙏

"Creation has put a full orchestra inside you, free of charge. This makes life so much more interesting and vibrant. Learn to enjoy your heart by ceasing to resist it.

It's not about losing yourself in your emotions. It's about being willing to experience them in the same way you experience a beautiful sunset. You simply let the sunset come in. You're not doing anything. You are simply allowing awareness to be aware of what is in front of it.

Sometimes, it's a beautiful sunset. Sometimes, it's a sense of loss. The process is exactly the same: consciousness is experiencing an object of consciousness. You are not clinging to it or suppressing it. You are simply experiencing it.

If you cling to the object, it stays. If you suppress it, it stays. If it stays, it will distort reality. You are no longer open to life - you have a bias for certain things. These samskaras are powerful packets of energy. They distort your perception of life, and you constantly pay the price.

When thoughts and emotions are suppressed, they rot down there. They will pop up at different times and cause serious problems in your life. This is what Freud taught, and it was also taught thousands of years earlier in the Upanishads. Learning to make peace with your heart is a major step toward extricating yourself from the very human predicament we all find ourselves in."

OCD and intrusive thoughts can be so debilitating. The more we try to not think of something, the more energy we give it and therefore the more power it has over us. Just like when we keep adding wood to a fire, it will continue to burn. But if we stop adding wood, what happens? The fire slowly loses its flames and starts to die down, until eventually it burns out on its own.

In the same way, when we stop feeding intrusive thoughts with fear, resistance, or constant checking, they gradually lose their intensity and frequency. The thought may still appear from time to time, but without the fuel of our reaction, it no longer has the same power to consume us.❤️

Over time, the mind learns that the thought is just a thought, not a threat that needs to be solved or controlled. You start to build inner safety within where intrusive thoughts may still pop into your head, but they don't have the same power over you anymore because you allow them to be there instead of resisting them.

It takes time and practice but healing is possible. 💓

🌸 I created a new self-compassion meditation for OCD ~ this one includes a few more cues for grounding and safety with internal and external anchors.

As well as an invitation to bring a soothing colour to mind, to help nourishing the hurting part. 🙏

I've also added a few more compassionate phrases, acknowledging the impact that OCD can have on relationships. ♥️
