Some of the gluten free meals I enjoyed from around Burlington, VT. 🌲🍁
There were a lot of options choose from in the area and there’s even a 100% gluten free bakery not far from the city! 🥖 🍞 🥯

Plus, I’ve included a long-haul gf flight meal at the end for a dose of reality living as a coeliac traveler ✈️ It was dry, and the bread roll had the consistency of a stress ball 🪨 but overall, the meals weren’t awful. I was grateful that my GF meal made it onto the flight despite an earlier cancellation!

I’m incredibly excited to share that my research is published in Australian Psychologist! This is my first ever (and first authored) publication on nutritional psychiatry – a topic I’m extremely passionate about.

This research explored the attitudes and intentions of Australian psychology students toward the use of nutrition interventions for mental health care. Psychology students’ positive attitudes were a strong predictor of their intention to use nutrition interventions in their future practice.

Regardless of the nutrition education students had received during their psychology training or from external sources, like social media, this attitude-intention relationship remained a strong predictor of future use of nutrition interventions for mental health care.

Psychology students expressed a need for nutrition training aligned with their intended use of nutrition interventions in the future. It appears that some nutrition education and guidelines may be necessary to include within psychology education programs to ensure the safety and efficacy of nutrition interventions used in mental health care.

I’d love to know your thoughts on this topic, whether you’re a practitioner or not!

A review published this week had some key insights into non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). It turns out that gluten may be only a fraction of the picture for people with NCGS.

What can nutrigenomics tell us?

We’re used to getting information on our health from blood and urine tests, or imaging like x-rays.
These are on the spot tests that show how our body is functioning at that present moment in time. Levels of nutrients, inflammatory markers, infectious agents, and metabolites are all wonderful predictors of what’s happening in our bodies.

These types of tests can tell us what is currently happening, whereas genomics tells us what might happen. Together, these are a powerful combination of health information to personalise the next steps to improve your health.

Genomics shows us risk. Risk for good, and risk for bad. It’s a means of knowing why or how you are susceptible to certain diseases.

Nutrigenomics — whilst it can take ancestry into account — isn’t an ancestry test like many of the popular genetic tests out there.

Nutritional genetic testing looks at specific genes, genetic variation, and current nutritional status to determine how your food and genes are interacting.

It can indicate what we can change NOW to help prevent problems in the future.

Sound interesting? I offer nutrigenomic testing and consulting. If you’d like to learn more about this, I have a new article (https://johannabush.com/what-is-nutrigenomics/) covering nutrigenomics in more detail.

Feel free to reach out to me if you would like to determine if nutrigenomics is a good fit for you.

Nutrigenomics is the relationship between nutrients and genetic expression. Genetic variations and nutritional intake can impact our health, disease risk and symptom management.

If you have asthma and use your reliever puffer more than twice a week, you need to speak with your GP about how to better control your asthma. 🤧

If you are at risk of anaphylaxis, having poorly controlled asthma may cause your allergic reaction to be more severe if you have food, insect or drug allergy.

Head to the World Asthma Day website for lots of great resources to help raise awareness and find out more about asthma management 👉 https://bit.ly/420iR1g.
