Five years ago, I sat the ACVREP Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) examination and became internationally certified. Today, I am proud to have successfully recertified for a further five years.

This achievement is personally meaningful, but it also reflects the continued growth and recognition of Orientation and Mobility as a profession. Within Australia, COMS certification is increasingly recognised as the benchmark qualification for Orientation and Mobility Specialists delivering therapeutic supports under the NDIS, helping to ensure high-quality, evidence-based services for people who are blind or have low vision.

I am grateful to the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP), the Orientation and Mobility Association of Australasia (OMAA), and the many colleagues and mentors who continue to strengthen our profession.

Maintaining COMS certification requires ongoing professional development and continuing education, ensuring practitioners remain aligned with international standards, current research, and best practice approaches. This commitment to lifelong learning ultimately benefits the people we support by ensuring services remain contemporary, effective, and person-centred.

It is a privilege to be part of a profession that empowers individuals to travel safely, confidently, and independently. I look forward to continuing to grow as a practitioner and delivering the highest quality Orientation and Mobility services over the next five years.

The new Sensaball cane tip is a really interesting addition to the world of orientation and mobility. Designed as a multidirectional rolling tip, it glides smoothly across surfaces like brick paving, uneven footpaths, grass, tactile ground surface indicators and more, while still providing strong tactile feedback through the cane. (Sensaball)

Like all cane tips, there’s no “one size fits all.” As a general rule of thumb, static cane tips (tips that don’t roll) often provide stronger tactile feedback, while rolling tips can offer a much smoother ride with less jarring and catching. The Sensaball aims to balance both — giving users a smoother glide while still maintaining a good amount of tactile information.

For some people, that combination may feel more comfortable and efficient, especially across rough or inconsistent surfaces.

An Orientation & Mobility Specialist can help determine which cane tip best matches your travel style, technique and environments.

Today I explored using a vision simulation app to demonstrate Optic Neuropathy and the impact it can have on everyday travel and independence.

Optic Neuropathy refers to damage to the optic nerve, which affects how visual information travels from the eye to the brain. Depending on the cause and severity, it can reduce clarity of vision, contrast sensitivity, colour perception, and detail vision. Thousands of Australians live with conditions affecting the optic nerve, which can significantly impact daily life and independent mobility.

From an Orientation & Mobility perspective, Optic Neuropathy can create challenges such as:
• Difficulty reading signage in places like shopping centres or transport hubs
• Trouble recognising faces or identifying people passing by
• Reduced ability to detect uneven ground surfaces or changes in terrain
• Difficulty identifying approaching stairs, curbs, or obstacles
• Increased fatigue from constantly concentrating to interpret visual information

Vision simulation technology can be a powerful way to help families, educators, support workers, and the general public better understand the functional impact of vision impairment beyond just “blurred vision.”

Ever heard of NaviLens?

It’s a powerful app that helps people who are blind or have low vision navigate public transport with real-time information. Using your phone’s camera, it can detect special NaviLens codes from a distance—helping you identify the correct approaching tram and track your journey live while you’re onboard.

In this video, I’m at the Melbourne University tram stop, using my iPhone to scan NaviLens codes on the timetable board and even on the approaching tram—making travel more independent and accessible.

Technology is becoming an essential tool in orientation and mobility in 2026. As new innovations continue to emerge, they’re opening up more opportunities for independence, confidence, and safer travel than ever before.
