The ANMF is the largest union in the country with over 302,000 nurses, midwives and carers joining strongly together since 1924. There is no single explanation for why workplace violence and aggression occur in nursing and midwifery, with incidents shaped by a combination of individual, environmental and organisational factors.

Some factors can be modified but some can't. The responsibility to prevent workplace violence and aggression isn't to be solely placed upon individual nurses and midwives.

Rather than asking only, “How can we better prepare nurses and midwives to deal with violence?”, workplaces can also ask, “What is happening here that increases the risk of violence, and what can we change?”

This creates opportunities for nurses and midwives to investigate their own workplaces and collaboratively test practical changes.

A decade after launching Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) advocacy charity Go Gentle Australia at the National Press Club in Canberra, founder Andrew Denton returned to the podium last week to mark how far laws have come and, equally, that reform is far from finished.

To help address ongoing barriers, Denton announced the establishment of the Go Gentle VAD Research Fund, designed to produce evidence that can drive policy reform, advocacy and education.

Politicians across Australia are underestimating public support for stronger action on climate change, including reducing the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels.

As Australia prepares for the world's most important annual climate meeting, The Conference of the Parties (COP 31) in November, new research from University if Queensland shows a siginificant gap.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) Planetary Health Framework positions the world's 28 million nurses as central change-makers in community preparation, disaster response, healthcare decarbonisation, and climate justice.

These latest findings from the University of Queensland should encourage policymakers to reassess assumptions about public attitudes towards climate change.

Unhoused and missing meals.

Poverty is stressful and has multiple flow on effects to health, healthcare and hospitals.

1 in 7 Australians are below the poverty line. 1 in 6 are children.

Many circumstances can bring someone to live below the poverty line. Some of them may even be fellow nurses, midwives and carers.

This Anti-Poverty Week is calling for the Australian Government to establish standard measures of poverty and targets to reduce it.

Legislating official measures reported on annually that includes monetary and multidimensional measures are needed to tackle poverty in Australia.

Nurses and midwives are natural problem solvers.

If you have a problem you’d like to solve and want to build the evidence to prove it, $40 million in research grants from the Australian Government are currently available.

The 2026 Clinician Researchers: Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health grants, funded by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), are available for nurses and midwives working on the wards to conduct research aimed at improving clinical care and practice.

The leading Principal Investigator must be a practicing nurse, midwife, or allied health professional

Minimum data applications must be submitted by 14 October 2026.

Solidarity with Royal Hobart Hospital nurses and midwives who walked off the job yesterday ✊

We stand with Launceston General Hospital nurses and midwives, who are to take stop-work action today. 💪

Industrial action is not taken lightly, but after months of negotiations with the Tasmanian Government and "a raft of evidence, Tasmanian nurses and midwives are left with no alternative.

Taking action together, nurses and midwives are fighting for a new enterprise agreement that delivers better working conditions and safer patient care, including legislative staff-to-patient ratios and measures to curb violence and aggression.
