💙 Strengthening partnerships for healthier hearts

Recently, the Timor-Leste Hearts Fund team returned to Dili to reconnect with our valued partners and continue the important conversations that are helping strengthen cardiac care in Timor-Leste.

Throughout the visit, we met with government representatives, healthcare leaders, clinicians, and partner organisations to discuss shared priorities for improving cardiovascular health across the country.

Our discussions focused on strengthening collaboration across the health system, supporting workforce development, improving access to diagnosis and treatment, and identifying opportunities to work together to deliver sustainable, long-term improvements in cardiac care.

Visits like these are an important reminder that lasting change is built through strong relationships, mutual trust, and a shared commitment to improving health outcomes.

💙 Strengthening partnerships through knowledge and collaboration
Last week, Timor-Leste Hearts Fund CEO Jane Williams and Dr Herculano Seixas dos Santos, Head of Cardiology at our medical partner Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV) in Dili, attended the 74th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ).

The conference brought together leading cardiologists, researchers and healthcare professionals from across Australia, New Zealand and beyond to share the latest advances in cardiovascular medicine. Sessions covered a broad range of topics, including cardiac imaging, heart failure, prevention, genetics, digital health and emerging research.

The meeting provided an invaluable opportunity for Dr Herculano to expand his knowledge, exchange ideas with international colleagues, and strengthen professional networks that support the ongoing development of cardiac services in Timor-Leste.

It was also wonderful to reconnect with some of our dedicated volunteer clinicians, including Associate Professor Dr Elizabeth Paratz, whose continued commitment to improving heart health in Timor-Leste is deeply appreciated.

We thank the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand for another outstanding scientific meeting and look forward to applying new knowledge and strengthening collaborations that will help improve cardiovascular care for patients in Timor-Leste. ❤️

Too often, patients are diagnosed late — when their condition has already become severe. Limited access to specialist care, diagnostic tools and treatment options means that conditions which are treatable elsewhere can become life-threatening.

For families, this can mean difficult journeys, long waits, or going without care altogether.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. By strengthening local cardiac services and improving access to early diagnosis and treatment, we can change outcomes — and save lives.
