Extended Families Australia

Extended Families Australia Dedicated to supporting and making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities and their families.

We believe in an inclusive community where every participant and their family receives the support, respect, and opportunities they deserve. Extended Families is a not-for-profit organisation providing disability support for children (and young people) and their families, operating in Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. We believe everyone deserves friendship and fun in their lives, and we aim

to widen social networks, empower individuals, promote inclusion and strengthen the bonds people have within their local area. Children and families who are supported by us have access to a wide range of flexible support and programs including individualised volunteer matching program for social, recreational and respite support; play groups; friendship groups for parent / carer peer support and a range of social events. Our social events and programs focus on introducing children and their families to new activities, experience, develop new skills and most importantly having fun! For more information about us visit extendedfamilies.org.au or call 03 9355 8848.

What is Plan Management?

It’s one of the most common questions we hear, and it doesn’t have to be complicated.

A Plan Manager helps you:
✔️ Pay your providers
✔️ Track your NDIS budget
✔️ Stay organised
✔️ Stay in control

At Extended Families, we focus on making things clear, simple, and stress‑free, so you can focus on what matters most.

Save this to come back to later 💾

📩📞 Message us or call our Plan Management team if you’d like to talk it through.

Why volunteering works for me…” 💬

There are so many reasons our volunteers choose to be part of Extended Families, but one thing unites them all: connection. Through shared experiences, friendships and giving back, volunteering creates purpose and belonging for everyone involved.

Our volunteers say it best, so this National Volunteer Week we're taking a few moments to hear from them on 'Why volunteering with Extended Families works for them?'

Top 3 things families told us at the Melbourne Source Kids Expo.

After spending time with families at Source Kids, three messages came through loud and clear:
1. “We don’t really know what good support is supposed to look like.”
Finding quality support shouldn’t feel confusing. Families want clarity, consistency and people they can trust.

2. “We want support that actually builds skills.”
Support that works alongside Allied Health goals - helping children and young people develop skills that matter in everyday life.

3. “We just want the right support worker… not another random.”
Relationships matter. The right Inclusion Support Worker (ISW) can make all the difference.

Our LinC Support Worker service, focuses on trusted, quality support that empowers people and families - through thoughtful matching and strong relationships with Allied Health professionals.

We brought playdough… and it turned into one of the busiest stalls at the Expo 👀

Over two days at the Source Kids Expo, we had families, kids (and honestly, a few adults 😅) stopping by to build, create and connect.

But what we loved most?
The conversations behind it.
💬 Parents looking for the right support worker - not just anyone
💬 Families wanting support that actually builds skills, not just fills time
💬 Allied health professionals looking for workers who can follow through between sessions

That’s exactly where LinC sits. We don’t just match support workers — we focus on:
✔️ Genuine connection (the kind that keeps people coming back)
✔️ Capacity building in real-life settings
✔️ Supporting therapy goals through our Allied Health Program
✔️ Now also delivering TAC-funded support

And yes, we’re still thinking about some of those incredible playdough creations 🐙🎂🌈

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared their stories, and trusted us with a small piece of their world 💙

We’re honoured to have our Cultural Diversity Drama Day highlighted by the Victorian Multicultural Commission Cultural Diversity Week - VMConnect campaign.

In collaboration with Fusion Theatre, families came together in a culturally responsive, multigenerational workshop grounded in creativity, connection and shared learning. A welcoming space, inclusive facilitation and strong community support created a beautiful opportunity to build relationships and celebrate diversity.

CEO Graeme West shared, this initiative reflects Extended Families Australia’s commitment to inclusive, culturally responsive spaces where children and young people with disability, and their families, feel welcomed, connected and celebrated.

We’re proud to continue creating connection, growing inclusion and building community alongside families, partners and communities across Victoria.
