Sleep disturbance is common among dentists, particularly those experiencing stress, anxiety, or high responsibility. There is a two-way relationship between sleep and mental health. Poor sleep impairs concentration, emotional regulation, memory, and pain tolerance - all critical for safe dental practice. Sleep is a core pillar of professional performance and patient safety, not an optional self-care extra.

The Hidden Burnout Crisis in Dentistry

Dentistry consistently ranks among the professions with the highest burnout risk, yet many dentists normalise exhaustion as part of the job. Dental practitioners are particularly vulnerable with the combination of precision work, time pressure, patient anxiety, perfectionism, and business demands.

When Your Identity Is Dentistry: The Mental Health Risks of Over-Identification

Many dentists don’t just do dentistry - they are dentists. While professional pride can be motivating, over-identification with work creates vulnerability when things go wrong: complaints, complications, negative feedback, or career transitions can feel like personal failures rather than professional challenges.

Perfectionism: The double-edged sword

High standards are essential in dentistry, but unchecked perfectionism is strongly linked to anxiety, imposter syndrome, and chronic dissatisfaction. Differentiating healthy striving for perfection and maladaptive perfectionistic concerns that fuels self-criticism and fear of mistakes is important.

Even the most competent and conscientious dentists can experience complaints or regulatory scrutiny yet few are prepared for the emotional aftermath. Complaints and legal or regulatory action are deeply stressful experiences even when outcomes are favourable. The emotional impact does not reflect weakness; it reflects humanity.

Decision fatigue can subtly increase irritability, indecision, risk-avoidance, and self-doubt, particularly later in the day or week. It is important to be able to recognise signs such as mental fog, disproportionate stress over small issues, or feeling ‘drained but not physically tired.’

By reducing unnecessary mental load, you can protect patient safety, improve mood, and finish the day with more psychological energy left for life outside the clinic.

There is a risk that dental practitioners become an emotional sponge or shock absorber for anxious, fearful, and sometimes aggressive patients without realising the cumulative psychological toll this takes. Emotional contagion and repeated exposure to patient distress can lead to compassion fatigue. It is important to learn how to remain empathetic without internalising stress, by setting emotional boundaries, grounding after difficult appointments, and reframing responsibility for patient emotions.

Why do we struggle to ask for help?

Dentistry is a profession built on competence, control, and responsibility. But these traits can make it difficult to ask for help when you are struggling, which can contribute to worsening outcomes. This is both an individual and cultural issue within the profession.

“That’s a problem for future Homer. Man, I don’t envy that guy.” Homer Simpson.

Sometimes it’s easy to push an important task to the end of the list, or to the next day. We get busy, or there is another more urgent and pressing job that we must attend to. Procrastination is an avoidance behaviour or coping mechanism that has gone a little off track. It is usually a result of feelings of anxiety or even dread about a task that they have to complete. In order to overcome these negative feelings, people switch to another task or activity, one that gives them more joy. But this is only temporary relief, because that task is still looming in the background, and as every minute ticks over, the deadline moves ever closer.

We all feel better after a good night’s sleep. We wake up refreshed, energised and ready to tackle whatever the world throws our way. Conversely a poor sleep leaves us feeling listless and grumpy. And the evidence says that insufficient sleep will increase your negative emotional response to stress and decrease your positive emotions.

How often do you step outside during the work day to engage with nature? Do you take a walk to grab a coffee, or sit in the park to eat lunch? Or do you spend all day in the dental clinic?
Because the research tells us that spending a few minutes in nature can boost attention, reduce feelings of stress and improve your mood. Getting two hours per week of nature time has been linked to better health and wellbeing, with 20 minutes at a time shown to be ideal for reducing stress hormones like cortisol.

The clock has ticked over into the New Year, and for many people, the holidays are a distant memory as the reality of work kicks back in. New Year is often the time when people take stock and think about all the things that they want to improve in the coming 12 months.
