If you think food safety is the sole responsibility of the owner of an establishment, well, you’re wrong. These days, responsible food service venues and food processing facilities understand that every person in the chain holds responsibility for the outcome - whether that is food fit to eat, or foodborne illness. Sure, an owner can lay down the rules, but if they don’t walk their talk, they will not be an example for their workers to follow. If they aren’t open to hearing about the challenges workers are facing when it comes to food safety, and discussing solutions then little progress can be made. What is needed is a revolution in food safety - the development of an entire food safety culture.

Did you know that there are close to 4.1 million instances of foodborne illness in Australia annually?
Contaminated food is responsible for around 30,800 hospitalisations and 76 deaths per year. This is a tragedy when just through some simple strategies and a lot of awareness, we can work to lower this number significantly. This is where having a food safety culture that everyone is involved in can work wonders. Training is part of it, yes, but so is ensuring that all workers have a deep understanding of what food safety means on an everyday basis.

There are many reasons why food safety culture is important for everyone to be a part of. First of all, having everyone on board, from owners to managers to employees, gives you the best chance of avoiding foodborne illness.

It takes everyone’s efforts to keep a workplace creating safe food daily. Everyone is affected when foodborne illness strikes. The customers and community are involved, as well as the brand which can have its name tarnished and suffer from financial loss which also affects its workers.

To avoid these ill effects, give yourself and your workers the knowledge you need, whether that be training, or awareness of on the job common practices.
