Introducing Alkira’s new Participant Committee! 👏

Elected by participants, for participants — this group plays a vital role in shaping the supports that enable people to live their everyday lives.

The Committee ensures participant voices directly influence how supports are designed and delivered — strengthening independence, building confidence, and making sure people can access their community, maintain relationships, and function in the ways that matter to them.

This isn’t just input — it’s part of how we make sure supports work in real life.

📖 Making our history accessible

We’re looking for volunteers to help create a screen‑reader‑friendly version of our history book through simple transcription and copy‑typing. This would be a community‑led effort, very much in the spirit in which Alkira began.

No specialist skills needed! Just care, patience, and a love of Alkira’s story.

Interested? We’d love to hear from you. Contact Desma on [email protected] or 9890 1365 to discuss.

It was a pleasure to welcome Gabriel Ng MP to Thurston Street for a tour of Alkira Disability Services.

During his visit, Gabriel had the opportunity to see firsthand how Alkira supports participation, connection and belonging, and to meet some of the people in our community, including CEO Julia, Matthew, Alec and Tayla.

A special thank you to Matthew, who prepared a personalised welcome card for Gabriel and proudly helped conduct the tour.

Every day at Alkira, we see people working towards their goals — whether that’s building skills, participating in the community or trying something new. Centres like ours play an important role in creating opportunities for people to connect, contribute and thrive.

As demand for individualised support and community participation continues to grow, it is more important than ever to recognise the value of inclusive, community-based environments that foster shared experiences, relationships and meaningful participation.

Thank you, Gabriel, for taking the time to visit and engage so warmly with our community. We hope you enjoyed the tour — and the coconut balls!

We’re proud to re‑release A Short History of Alkira (1955–1999). A story that began with families coming together to create something better for their children.
It’s where we started—and a reminder of what matters most. That original spirit—families stepping forward so their children could be seen, heard, and have a place in the world—still matters today. More than ever.

Now available digitally, with a new 2026 foreword by Dianne Bassett, parent and life member.

Some stories are worth holding onto.

We’re incredibly proud to share that Luca, a valued member of the Alkira community, has been selected to represent Victoria at the Special Olympics Australia National Games 🏊‍♂️

The National Games will be held from 19–23 October this year, and Luca’s journey to this milestone is built on dedication, resilience and a love of swimming. Luca recently had an outstanding weekend at the Melbourne Eastern Ranges Swim Meet, achieving a personal best in the 400m Individual Medley, placing 1st in the 200m Breaststroke and 4 x 50m Medley Relay, and earning 2nd place in the 100m Butterfly.

Now, Luca is focused on continuing to train, improve and prepare for Nationals — and he’s fundraising to support his participation through the Australian Sports Foundation.

We’re here with you.

There’s been a lot of discussion this week about changes to the NDIS and what they may mean for people with disability, families and providers.

We know many people are feeling uncertain. So are we.

Right now, there is still limited detail about how many of these changes will work in practice. What we do know is that the NDIS environment is changing and organisations across the sector are working hard to understand and respond to that change.

What hasn’t changed is this:
• Your supports continue
• Our commitment to quality and safety continues
• We will keep communicating openly as more information becomes available

At Alkira, we are actively planning for the future so we can continue supporting people to live the lives they choose — with continuity, care and strong relationships at the centre of what we do.

We’ll continue sharing updates, explaining what we know (and what we don’t yet know), and helping our community navigate what comes next together.

Our bungalow project is truly taking shape. This home has been purpose‑designed to support accessibility, independence and dignity, ensuring the people who will live here can exercise choice and agency in their everyday lives. Seeing the plans translated into a real, physical space is a powerful reminder of the impact that thoughtful design and collaboration can achieve.

We’re grateful to be working alongside Todd Devine Homes and sincerely thank Community Bank Inner East for their generous support in helping bring this project to life. Partnerships like these make long‑term, inclusive outcomes possible.

This isn’t just a building — it’s a place where people will live, belong and thrive. We are still accepting applications to determine who will live in this beautiful new home.
