WILDFIRE: Monash University's Student Rural and Indigenous Health Club WILDFIRE aims to:

1. Develop and maintain a multi-disciplinary approach

Working In Leading Development For Indigenous and Rural Education

The club was established in 1993 by Monash University School of Rural Health (SRH) and is a branch of the National Rural Health Student Network (NRSHN). Initially our membership was limited to pre-clinical medical students of Monash University. However we soon recognized that improving rural health is the responsibility of all healthcare providers - thus we have grown to encompass nursing students and allied health students, as well as both pre-clinical and clinical medical students. Currently our membership is made up of approximately 400 medical, nursing and allied health students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The co-ordination of WILDFIRE is overseen by a Council of students elected by the student body, including representatives from each of the subcommittees. Our largest subcommittee is based at the Clayton Campus, with others at Bendigo (Regional Clinical School–RCS). Churchill, East Gippsland (RCS-Bairnsdale and Sale), Gippsland (RCS-Traralgon and Warragul), Mildura (RCS), Parkville (Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences) and Peninsula. WILDFIRE, works through the Council with the support of SRH, currently headed by Professor Judi Walker, to achieve some fundamental goals. Foster relations between all students and health professionals interested in rural and Indigenous health and culture
2. Facilitate discussion, action and reporting/research on all rural and Indigenous matters amongst the student body and with our affiliates
3. Support students during their educational life span through their rural and Indigenous experiences
5. Encourage a long term commitment to living and working in rural areas of Australia.

EXTREME MEDICINE
Expedition, wilderness, underwater, mountain, or humanitarian medicine? Dr Janine Gregson has done it all.
Dr Gregson is an anaesthetist and Navy Captain, having served in Afghanistan, Bougainville, East Timor and Banda Aceh. She is part of the Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) which deploys staff to assist post disasters and health emergencies in Australia and Asia Pacific.

NRHSN Council 2 🌾🩺🔥

Last weekend 2 of our WILDFIRE committee members flew to Adelaide to represent Monash at The National Rural Health Student Network council! Representatives fly from all across Australia to hear about Rural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health issues, as well as spend some time socialising and meeting other heath students from other universities!

We heard from some amazing speakers such as Professor Lucie Walters (former ACCRM president), Samantha Petric (Remote area nurse), Luke Wakely (Rural Paediatric Physiotherapist), and Dr Madison Shakespeare (Multidisciplinary academic, looking at access to clinical trials for First Nations peoples).
