Crohn's & Colitis Australia

Crohn's & Colitis Australia Empowering people to live fearlessly while we help search for a cure of Crohn’s and colitis.
(237)

Crohn’s & Colitis Australia (CCA) has been working with people living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, healthcare professionals, governments and the public to minimise the impact that these conditions have on the community since 1985. For more than 36 years, CCA has been the only Australian organisation working with and for patients and their families, the doctors that treat them, and

the policymakers who can bring about change. CCA provides high quality information, supports life-changing research and campaigns vigorously – for more knowledge, better services and more support for people affected by inflammatory bowel disease.

"Years and years passed and no doctor could figure out what was wrong"

Jack’s journey with Crohn's disease began as early as he can remember. Never-ending doctor visits, hospital appointments and a whole lot of confusion.

It wasn't until a car accident and the subsequent flare-up that Jack finally received his diagnosis.

Stories like Jack’s are a reminder of why research matters – so more people can get the answers and support they need, sooner.

What should IBD research focus on next?

Patients, carers and clinicians have shared their priorities – now brought together into a Top 10 list, published in Internal Medicine Journal and helping shape Australia’s national research agenda.

From disease prevention to mental health support, this is where change begins.

Give before 30 June to help drive what comes next: crohnsandcolitis.org.au/appeal

"Surgery isn't the path anyone hopes for - but for some people with IBD, it's the one that leads to a better quality of life.

If surgery is on the table for you or someone you love, it's okay to have mixed feelings about it.

A stoma (where stool is diverted to allow healing) can be temporary or permanent - and while that's a lot to take in, many people find life on the other side of surgery is far better than living with severe, uncontrolled disease.

The most important thing? Ask your questions. Your stomal therapy nurse and IBD team are there to make sure you feel informed and supported every step of the way.

"Watching our 5-year-old son suffer for most of his life has shown us just how desperately more research is needed. Your support of IBD research gives hope to families like ours – and to future generations who deserve a different journey.”

No one should have to watch their loved one suffer for most of their lives – without the ability to help them.

For families like Xavier’s, the need for better treatments – and ultimately a cure – is beyond urgent. More research means earlier diagnosis, better care, and real hope for the future.

If you’re able to, you can support research that helps change stories like Xavier’s.

Taking part involves completing a short online survey (about 10 minutes) about your demographic and health information to check your eligibility. If you’re eligible, you’ll be invited to take part in a one-hour online interview about your healthcare experiences.

Fertility isn’t always a simple story - and for people living with Crohn’s or colitis, there can be extra layers to navigate 💜

This recent article from body+soul highlights some of the lesser-known health conditions that can impact fertility - including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

While many people with IBD can go on to have children, factors like active disease, inflammation or certain surgeries can make things more complex.

That’s why awareness, early conversations and the right support matter - so people living with IBD can make informed choices about their health and family planning.
