It’s Wintertime, which basically means your Chinese Medicine practitioner is going to be HOUNDING you more that usual to:

⛄️ Wear a scarf

⛄️ Layer up

⛄️ Wear socks at ALL TIMES (no bare feet!!)

⛄️ Keep your back and belly warm

I often say to my patients that Chinese Medicine is sort of “allergic” to Cold, and really it checks out: it’s the Yang (warm) energy that brings us to life, so we must protect it 🩷 Plus, it costs our bodies an enormous amount of energy to keep us warm during Winter, so why not give it a helping hand?

And if anything does pop up that requires more attention and support, you know who you call! (Your Chinese Medicine Practitioner of course!)

Happy Winter! ❄️🤍

Guì Zhī Tāng - 桂枝湯 - Cinnamon Twig Decoction

Gui Zhi Tang is one of the main formulas in Chinese Medicine for external invasion of Cold, which typically presents with symptoms such as fever and chills (not improved by sweating), headache, aversion to wind, stiff neck and nasal congestion.

We are basically talking about the first signs of a cold 🤒🤧

This formula is a pro at what it does (it’s one of the most important formulas in the Shang Han Lun - The Discussion of Cold Damage), but it’s also a very gentle formula because most of the ingredients are foods: Gui Zhi (cinnamon twig), Bai Shao (white peony), Sheng Jiang (fresh ginger), Da Zao (red dates), Zhi Gan Cao (honey-friend liquorice root) (I’ve used Gan Cao in this video).

Gui Zhi Tang works to release the exterior (Cold pathogen be gone!), especially from the muscle layer, and also harmonises the Defensive Qi and Nutritive Qi so that normal flow of Qi is restored (Cold causes things to contract and stagnate - this is why you can get body aches when you have a cold).

Classically, it is recommended to take this formula hot and then wrap yourself in warm clothes/blankets to help your body sweat a little (to help the Cold exit) 🧣

If you’re experiencing sniffles or any of the other symptoms mentioned above, I’m back in clinic this week and I’d love to help you get back to feeling 100%!

One of my most favourite things is constructing a herbal formula for my patients - it’s where my inner maths-nerd/problem-solver and love of Harry Potter unite ⚡️

After collecting as much information as possible from asking about signs and symptoms and checking the pulse and tongue, I get to work deciding which herbs are going to be best.

Constructing a herbal formula for me typically involves choosing a base formula as a starting point and then adding or subtracting herbs to get the formula to be the right fit for what the patient needs at the time.

Being able to tweak and adjust is only possible when we are using raw herbs or granules (because we add herbs individually to make up the formula), while if we use powders, pills/capsules and tinctures, these are ready-made, so we are looking for the closest formula to fit the presentation (still an excellent option).

Are you in need of some extra support? Consider this is your sign to give Chinese medicine a go! Link in bio to book

I once had a doctor who referred to PMS as “poor me syndrome”.

Here are my thoughts on this:

In the months where I have basically looked after myself (enough sleep, food, movement, nature time, and time with people I love), it’s like my body gives me a little wave just to say, “hey Queen, your period is on its way”. 🫶🏼

In the months where I have been working like a maniac, not sleeping enough, eating enough, moving enough or essentially just not taking care of my basic needs, PMS is more like, “RED ALERT! RED ALERT! THE PERIOD IS COMING”. 🚨

It’s an unmistakeable shift from glowing and feeling (mostly) like a goddess, to being overwhelmed, stressed, irritated, super teary, bloated, tired and exasperated by everyone who seems to need something from me 🙄🤬🫠

To get back to the “poor me” contemplation, what I think this means in the context of PMS is, “when I don’t meet my basic needs and then it comes time to rest and take a moment to go inward (pre- and during period time), it’s extremely hard to do this without feeling the debt I’ve put myself in. And gosh, after all the giving I’ve been doing, it would be so nice for someone to take care of me for a change! Poor me!”

It’s infinitely important to pay attention to your menstrual cycle. It’s there to remind us that we have this amazing capacity to traverse a stunningly complex, beautiful and sophisticated journey through all the different parts of us every single month. It’s an invitation from our bodies to get to know ourselves intimately, practice how we want and need to be in the world at each different stage of the cycle, and it TELLS us when we need to fill up our own cup more.

If PMS is turning the week before your period in to a sh*tty time, consider this your sign to book an acupuncture appointment - I’d love to support you!

It’s holiday time for me (almost)!

I’m having a break from the end of next week, so clinic will be closed from Saturday 16th May and I’ll be back from Monday 25th May.

If you want to catch me before I go, I’m in clinic tomorrow (Saturday) morning in North Fitzroy and next week in Moonee Ponds (Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri). Otherwise, I’ll see you when I’m back!
