🍬Is sugar holding your gut and overall health back?
My friend Crystal from .e.ostler explains things simply:
We all know excessive amounts of sugar isn't healthy, but how bad can it REALLY be? Here is why the type of sweetener you ingest makes a HUGE difference in you experiencing life the best way you can.
👎🏼BAD. Refined sugar is metabolised rapidly, which causes a sudden spike of glucose and insulin. Too much of this sugar can reduce beneficial bacteria in the gut and lead to a leaky gut syndrome. 😵💫
👎🏼BAD. Sugar alcohols are another highly processed product that can be called erythritol, sorbitol, xylitol and more. Because the body doesn't really know how to process sugar alcohols, they can cause severe BLOATING and DIARRHEA when eaten in excessive amounts. 😫
👍🏼BETTER. Stevia and Monk fruit are natural sweeteners that come from plants and can be up to 300 times sweeter than regular sugar, so you don't need as much. Though it can still spike insulin levels, Stevia and Monk Fruit have shown to have no ill affect on the healthy "gut flora."
🫶🏻BEST. Oh honey, the golden sweetness. 🍯Honey is full of antioxidants and has great antibacterial and antifungal power. Some varieties are being studied for specific therapeutic uses against Candida, h-pylori (major gut problems, more on these later) and contains prebiotics which nourishes the healthy gut bacteria.
🫶🏻BEST. 🍁Pure maple syrup (not the flavored corn syrup sold by the gallon) is not only high in antioxidants, but every spoonful offers nutrients like riboflavin, zinc, magnesium, calcium and potassium. This is another amazing option and actually contains less calories than honey!
Next time you are making something that calls for sugar, simply try SWAPPING it out for honey or pure maple syrup. Your gut will thank you!
