The last one is arguably the most difficult, but it’s also my favourite!
Because ultimately, we’re never going to live in a world where we never experience heightened emotions, anxiety, dysregulation etc. And the point of everything I do is not to get rid of those feelings. It’s to be able to move through them and not get stuck in a level of anxiety that’s unhelpful (because sometimes anxiety actually is helpful!).
Chronic, sticky, unhelpful anxiety thrives on attention. So in the moment where it’s asking you to go inward and monitor all your body sensations, check your heart rate, how you’re feeling, and what’s going on for you, you can end up reinforcing the idea that there is a threat.
Sometimes just proceeding anyway, even though you feel really uncomfortable, teaches your body that those uncomfortable sensations are okay. And that, ironically, is part of what reduces anxiety over time.
If anxiety has started to make your world smaller, particularly if yours tends to start in your body before you’ve even had an anxious thought, I have a free masterclass that’s a really good starting point in breaking the hold of anxiety.
