When Kay was diagnosed with breast cancer she was working as a cancer nurse in Bairnsdale.
As a health professional herself, she knew of the challenges of having cancer in a regional area, but nothing could have prepared her for the shock of having cancer herself.
“I think one of the biggest challenges for people in regional areas is that they don’t know what they don’t know,” she said. “If no one helps you navigate the system, it’s very easy to miss out on information, services and support.”
Kay said that, even with her nursing background, she struggled to take in all the information and just wanted someone to help her with decisions.
“Being treated away from home doesn’t just mean the cost of petrol. It’s meals, accommodation, time away from your normal life, and the emotional strain of constantly travelling while you’re already dealing with cancer,” she said.
Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 information and support line can be a vital service for people in regional areas, answering questions about cancer, talking through challenges and linking callers to financial counselling, peer support and other support networks.
If you, or someone you know has had a cancer diagnosis, you don’t have to face it alone. Cancer information and support is available to anyone, no matter where in Victoria you live.
