RANZCP’s South Australian Branch has welcomed new State Budget investment to strengthen support for people experiencing mental health, alcohol and other drug crises, while calling for a stronger focus on outreach and non-acute services, particularly for young people and regional communities.

SA Branch Chair Dr Devon Marshman said the $28 million investment in dedicated mental health assessment units shows the value of clinician‑government collaboration, and should be followed by further reforms to expand community care and tackle the shortage of psychiatrists in rural and remote areas.

Today is Day, an awareness-raising event to break down the stigma around doctors' mental health. The theme for this year is “Safe to speak up”.

If you're a psychiatrist or trainee facing health or wellbeing challenges, remember that you’re not alone. Many doctors experience similar struggles, yet too few reach out for support.

The College is committed to supporting members experiencing mental health challenges. If you’re struggling, we encourage you to talk to someone – whether it’s the College confidential advice line, a counsellor, psychiatrist or peer.

Trigger warning: discussion of mental health crisis and distressing incidents

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)’s Four Corners investigation into the way people in mental health distress are treated is deeply confronting and distressing.

It’s a stark reminder of how vulnerable people can be in moments of crisis and how critical it is that emergency responses are grounded in care, clinical expertise and de-escalation.

The RANZCP NSW Branch has called for urgent reform, including stronger training and expanded co-response models that bring mental health workers into frontline responses, so people's treatment is person-centred and rooted in dignity.

Dr Choi shares how he looks after his wellbeing and maintains balance outside of work. From the pre-clinical window to daily handovers, ward rounds, youth outreach reviews and supervision.

“Ward rounds are where the good stuff happens. Collaborative, occasionally chaotic, always rewarding. The best clinical insights rarely come from the loudest voice in the room, so I try to make space for nursing, allied health, and families to be properly heard.”
