Today is a significant day for the epilepsy community.

The Senate Community Affairs References Committee has tabled its final report into Epilepsy in Australia — the first national parliamentary inquiry dedicated specifically to epilepsy.

The report contains 27 recommendations spanning diagnosis, treatment, workforce, research, community awareness, post-diagnosis support, NDIS access, rural and remote care, peer support and much more.

Importantly, Recommendation 1 calls for the Australian Government to develop and implement a National Epilepsy Action Plan, aligned with the WHO Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders.

For Epilepsy Australia, this report represents both recognition and responsibility.

Recognition of what hundreds of people with epilepsy, families, carers, clinicians, researchers and organisations told the Inquiry.

And responsibility now to work constructively across governments, the epilepsy sector and the broader health and disability systems to turn recommendations into meaningful change.

To every person who made a submission, appeared before the Committee, shared deeply personal experiences or contributed professional expertise: thank you.

TOMORROW: THE SENATE INQUIRY REPORT INTO EPILEPSY IN AUSTRALIA

The Senate Community Affairs References Committee is due to table its report into epilepsy in Australia tomorrow, 17 September 2026. Parliament’s current schedule confirms the report is due tomorrow, with the Senate sitting from 9.00am to 6.00pm AEST.

We expect the report to be tabled during the parliamentary sitting day, with the final report and recommendations to become publicly available after tabling.

Over the next few days, Epilepsy Australia will be in Canberra meeting across political parties and with key stakeholders to discuss the next phase: how the recommendations can be translated into practical, funded and lasting outcomes for people living with epilepsy, their families and communities.

This Inquiry has heard from lived experience, clinicians, researchers, service providers and organisations across the country. Tomorrow is an important milestone — but the real work begins with what happens after the report is released.

9 DAYS TO GO 💜

The Senate Inquiry into epilepsy in Australia is now due to report on 17 September 2026.

Over recent months, people living with epilepsy, families, carers, clinicians, researchers and organisations from across Australia have shared their experiences, expertise and hopes for change.

Epilepsy Australia has been present at hearings around the country, listening to the evidence and hearing first-hand the many ways epilepsy affects people’s lives — through health care, disability, education, employment, mental health, family life, regional access, research and support.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to this Inquiry.

The reporting date may have changed, but the importance of this moment has not.

In nine days, the Committee is expected to table its report and recommendations. We look forward to reading them carefully and to continuing to work constructively across the epilepsy community, with governments and with all stakeholders, to help turn the Inquiry’s findings into meaningful change.

Today marks an important milestone for the epilepsy community in Australia.

Epilepsy Australia appeared before the Senate Inquiry into Epilepsy in Australia, representing more than 270,000 Australians living with epilepsy, along with their families, carers and support networks.

We were honoured to share evidence on behalf of our member organisations and the broader community, advocating for better awareness, diagnosis, access to care, education, employment, safety and quality of life.

This moment has been shaped by months of collaboration and the powerful voices of people with lived experience who shared their stories to help inform this national conversation.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed, and to Sam Bryce, Paul Quilliam and our member representatives for speaking with a united voice on behalf of the community.

While today is an important step, our work continues. Together, we will keep pushing for a better future for all Australians affected by epilepsy.

This Friday, 26 June, an important milestone in epilepsy advocacy takes place as the Senate Inquiry into Epilepsy in Australia holds its public hearing.

This is a significant opportunity to shine a light on the experiences, challenges and needs of the more than 270,000 Australians living with epilepsy, as the Inquiry hears directly from people with lived experience, clinicians, researchers and organisations from across the country.

As the national peak body for epilepsy, Epilepsy Australia will be the first organisation to present before the Committee, drawing on the experiences and expertise of our member organisations and the broader epilepsy community. We will be advocating for practical reforms that improve awareness, diagnosis, healthcare, education, employment, safety and quality of life for Australians affected by epilepsy.

This hearing is the culmination of months of engagement across the sector and hundreds of submissions from individuals, families and organisations committed to improving outcomes for people living with epilepsy.

We thank everyone who shared their stories, experiences and expertise throughout the Inquiry process. Your voices have helped shape this national conversation.

The hearing will be streamed live online, and we encourage our community to follow this important discussion.

The Senate Community Affairs References Committee has announced an inquiry into Epilepsy in Australia, with a report due by 10 September 2026. Submissions will close on 15 May 2026.

This inquiry creates an important opportunity to bring national attention to epilepsy. It gives people living with epilepsy the chance to share their experiences at the highest level of government and help shape better understanding, policy and support across Australia.
