How this emergency department reduced its need to wrap and hold its patients

This emergency department faced significant challenges around procedural anxiety, particularly during IV cannulation.

High levels of patient distress often led to wrapping and holding patients to complete necessary procedures. The team needed a cost-effective solution to reduce the need to wrap and hold, while also being easy for staff to adopt in a fast-paced emergency environment.

After encountering Smileyscope while on fellowship at another major children's hopsital, the Paediatric Emergency Physician introduced Smileyscope to their team.

The impact has been significant- reducing the need for sedation and wrapping and holding, whilst also boosting staff morale.

"Procedural anxiety is something we see very often. Smileyscope has helped hugely in this area. Patients are calm, everyone is happier- which makes all the difference".

The future of healthcare isn't just about better treatments, it's about better experiences.

Smileyscope began as a small experiment for co-founder Dr Evelyn Chan- who was looking for a solution to a recurring problem she kept seeing in her patients.

What followed were the largest clinical trials ever conducted using virtual reality in procedural care- showing up to 60% reduction in pain, 40% less anxiety, half the need to restrain, and dramatically improved caregiver satisfaction.

But the real impact wasn't in the numbers, it was in the moments.

A nine-year-old who was able to complete an MRI without sedation (imagining the scanner as a dessert-making machine).

A cancer patient who finds their chemotherapy treatment more manageable.

Women who feel calmer and supported during some of the more vulnerable procedures, from IUD insertion to epidurals during childbirth.

These are moments of care, reimagined. Because when we change the experience, everything changes.

Ready to see what's possible in your setting? Smileyscope is currently offering hospitals and clinics a limited time offer of one month free for any new subscriptions or renewals before June 30. Head to the link in bio to contact our team and learn more.

Today, on the International Day of Action for Women’s Health, we recognise the clinicians championing more compassionate comfort care and pain management in women’s health. 💙

From miscarriage management, to IUD insertion and removal, hysteroscopy, colposcopy, and labour procedures, these experiences can be deeply uncomfortable, vulnerable, and emotionally challenging.

We’re grateful to the clinicians who refused to accept that women should simply “push through” pain, and who have helped drive meaningful change in patient experience.

A special thank you to Miss Natalie Nunes, Lauren Trepte, Irina Stankuvite, Dr Sara Day, Dr Talat Uppal, Dr Tanushree Rao, and many others for inspiring and guiding this work. Together, we can continue raising the standard for comfort, dignity, and support in women’s healthcare.

She thought she’d need nitrous again. This time was different.

When Keira was three she was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, which meant a lifetime of invasive procedures and treatments.

Before Smileyscope, that meant she had to come in early morning for nitrous gas sedation, adding additional time and stress to her procedures.

"With nitrous, I'd go into kind of like a scary world. It was like colours and everything everywhere. And then, my nurse, Gab, she introduced me to Smileyscope, which took me to another (virtual) world. So it's like, I'm not going to the hospital, I'm going underwater to go swim with seals. And it's like, I don't even know that my blood test is happening."

Thank you to for funding these headsets used by , and to Breakthrough Victoria for the support in creating this beautiful video.

Today is and we want to recognise and celebrate the incredible nurses we meet and work with every day through Smileyscope. đź’™

Nurses play such an important role in supporting not only patients, but also families, carers and healthcare teams during some of the most stressful and vulnerable moments.

At Smileyscope, we’re proud to have three nurses on our team, Alex, Vanessa and Jess, with both Alex and Jess coming from paediatric nursing backgrounds. Their clinical experience gives us a deep understanding of the important role nurses play and the impact they make every single day.

We know nursing takes compassion, resilience, empathy and strength, and today we want to thank every nurse for the amazing care and support you provide.

Happy International Nurses Day! 👩‍⚕️✨
