Does your child ask really big questions? Learn new things incredibly fast? Have an intense passion for one particular topic? Feel things very deeply?

These can all be signs of giftedness. And while that sounds straightforward, giftedness doesn't always look the way people expect.

Some gifted children become disengaged at school because learning feels repetitive.

Some hide their abilities to fit in socially. And some are what's called twice exceptional, meaning they are gifted and also have a learning difference like ADHD, dyslexia, or autism.

When this happens, strengths and challenges can mask each other in ways that are genuinely confusing for parents, teachers, and the child themselves.
A psychological assessment can help make sense of the full picture, not just the struggles, and not just the strengths, but how the two interact.

We've written a blog post on understanding giftedness and twice exceptionality.

Say hello to Maple!

Maple is our newest team member here at Step by Step Psychology! She's a 3-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer x Hungarian Vizsla who loves fetch, sunny naps and meeting new people.

Maple works alongside our new Team Leader Bianca as a therapy dog, bringing an extra layer of calm, comfort and connection to sessions through Animal Assisted Therapy.

We have a feeling she's going to be very popular around here.

When your child is angry, it can be really hard to know what to do, especially when it's happening a lot.

Anger is one of the emotions parents tell us they find most difficult to navigate. And it makes sense. It can feel big, unpredictable and personal.

But behind most angry outbursts is a child who is struggling to manage something they don't yet have the words for.

We've written a blog post with some practical tips on understanding and responding to your child's anger.

And if things feel like they've been really hard lately, we're here. Call us on 8821 6577 to book a time with one of our psychologists.

School holidays can be a great time to fit in an assessment, with less disruption to the school routine and more flexibility in scheduling.

Dr. Kate Horner has availability for autism and Specific Learning Disorder assessments these July school holidays at our Blackburn Clinic.

If you've been wondering whether your child might benefit from an assessment, or if their school has raised some concerns, the holidays can be a really practical time to get the process started.

Getting a clearer picture of how your child learns and experiences the world can make a genuine difference, both at home and in the classroom.

Anxiety in children doesn't always look like worry.

Sometimes it looks like stomach aches before school, or meltdowns that seem to come out of nowhere. It looks like avoiding activities they used to love, asking "what if" questions at bedtime, or finding it really hard to separate from you in the morning.
If any of this sounds familiar, it might be worth exploring as they might need a little extra support navigating some big feelings.

Save this post to share with a parent who needs to hear it today.
