“By the way syndrome” is when patients bring up important concerns right at the end of an appointment — often with a quick “oh, by the way…”. It can make it harder to fully assess and manage the issue properly. Research shows this happens in around 21% of visits, and overall in up to 39% of clinical encounters. It’s also been found that patients may only recall about 50% of what’s discussed during an appointment, which can contribute to things being left unsaid.
To get the most out of your appointment, come prepared with any questions or concerns you want to cover, and don’t be afraid to raise them early. If something comes to mind later, speak up — your clinician wants to hear it. Clear communication goes both ways, and making sure everything is addressed helps lead to better outcomes.
