Practice Management is not always treated as its own profession, even though it holds a practice together every day.
AAPM is Australia's only peak body dedicated solely to Practice Management, representing the profession across all healthcare practice settings, including general practice, specialist, allied health, dental, multi-disciplinary and more.
That means a professional home built specifically around the work Practice Managers actually do, with standards, education and community designed for the role, not borrowed from clinical or admin frameworks that do not quite fit.

Ask a Practice Manager who has been to the AAPM National Conference before, and they rarely talk about the sessions first.

Three things attendees tell us they take home every year:
⭐ The people. A room full of people who understand the job without you having to explain it.
⭐ The reset. Time out of the practice to think about the work, not just do it.
⭐ The practical takeaways. Ideas you can actually use on Monday, not notes that gather dust.

The learning matters. But it is the connection and the perspective that bring people back.

The 2026 conference runs 13 to 16 October in Brisbane. Registrations are open now at https://www.aapm.org.au/eventdetails/39252/2026-aapm-national-conference

There is no shortage of things landing in your inbox. Two to look out for are: The Practice Space and the Practice Manager Journal, both included in AAPM membership.

The Practice Space arrives fortnightly with the updates worth knowing, from sector changes to member news and the practical things that affect how you run your day.

The Practice Manager Journal lands quarterly for the deeper reads, the kind you actually want to sit down with rather than skim.

Worth a quick check that both are reaching you. If they are not, update your details at aapm.org.au so nothing slips past.

You could spend an hour Googling whether you are handling a staffing situation correctly. Or you could ask someone who already knows.

The AAPM HR Advisory Service is one of those member benefits that quietly earns its keep. Members call about the everyday and the awkward: underperformance, difficult conversations, award interpretation, restructures, and the situations that do not fit neatly into any policy.

Instead of second-guessing, you get a steer from someone who knows the territory. That is the difference between guessing and getting it right the first time.

People management is one of the hardest parts of the role. You do not have to work it out alone.

The 2026 AAPM National Conference is coming to Brisbane, 13 to 16 October, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Four days built around the work you actually do: leadership, people, compliance, finance and the day to day reality of running a practice. Multiple speakers mean you can follow the sessions that match where you are in the role, whether you are finding your feet or have been steering the ship for years.

The full program is looking great, and there is plenty to look forward to. Book today: https://www.aapm.org.au/eventdetails/39252/2026-aapm-national-conference

Some professional development is hard work. This is not that.

The Australian Digital Health Agency offers free, self-paced learning modules, and each one is worth 5 CPD points. They are practical, genuinely useful, and you can work through them between everything else the day throws at you.

Three worth doing first:
⭐ My Health Record, for getting the whole team confident with the basics.
⭐ Electronic prescribing, for the questions patients are already asking.
⭐ Secure messaging, for safer, faster communication between providers.

Free, flexible, and CPD in the bank. A rare combination.

Core Principle in practice: Human Resource Management.

Of the eight AAPM Core Principles, this is the one that keeps Practice Managers up at night. Not the rosters or the leave forms, but the conversations. The underperformance you have been meaning to address. The team member who has quietly checked out. The friction between two people you rely on.

Avoiding these does not make them go away. It usually makes them louder.

A few things that help:
⭐ Name the issue early, while it is still small and specific.
⭐ Separate the behaviour from the person. Describe what you have observed, not who you think they are.
⭐ Come in with a clear picture of what good looks like, so the conversation has somewhere to go.
⭐ Follow up. One conversation rarely fixes anything on its own.

You do not have to be a natural at this. You do have to be willing to start.

And if you would rather not interpret a tricky staffing matter alone, the AAPM HR Advisory Service is there for exactly that. www.aapm.org.au/resources/aapm-hr-advisory-service/

Much of the work that shapes your profession happens in rooms you will never sit in. That is exactly where AAPM shows up.

As the peak body for Practice Management, AAPM represents the profession in the conversations that influence it, from sector consultations to the policy shifts that eventually land on your desk. The aim is simple: to make sure Practice Managers have a voice where decisions about the profession are being made.

You are busy running a practice. It helps to know someone is in the room for the bigger picture.

Winter can be peak season for many practices. The phones run hot, the waiting room fills, and the front desk absorbs all of it while still being the first friendly face every patient sees.

The team out the front sets the tone for the whole visit. A few small things make the busy weeks easier on them:
⭐ Start the day with a quick huddle. Two minutes on what is ahead saves a dozen surprises later.
⭐ Protect their breaks. A skipped lunch feels efficient in the moment and costs you by Thursday.
⭐ Agree a plan for the surge. Who steps in when the queue builds, and what can safely wait until it clears.

None of it is complicated. It is just easy to let slide when you are flat out. Looking after the people at the front desk is how the whole practice keeps its head through the busiest months.

At some point most Practice Managers wonder how to formally back the experience they already have. That is exactly what the CPM and Fellowship pathways are for.

Certified Practice Manager (CPM AAPM) recognises a strong, well rounded grasp of the role. Fellowship (FAAPM) acknowledges sustained leadership and contribution to the profession.

Neither is about collecting letters after your name. They are about having your expertise recognised, and giving the practices you work with confidence in the person steering the ship.

If you have been in the role a while and quietly wondered whether it is worth it, it is worth a look.
