The Australian and New Zealand Fontan Registry page provides a community for children, youn Welcome to the Fontan Registry!

As a participant, parent or friend of the Registry, we invite you to join this community to share information and collaborate with other members. This page has been created by the Registry to build a forum where doctors and patients can ask questions, share their experiences and even guide future research. The Fontan Registry is the largest Fontan database in the world, providing the community wit

h information to help improve the long-term health of patients and explore different treatment options. Despite being around for 40 years, there are still many things we do not know about the future of the Fontan procedure. By helping us ask important questions through research projects, you can be involved in providing the whole Fontan community with a better future.

MEET JOEL...... Joel is a Fontan Star who celebrated his 40th birthday back in March this year. Joel has completed a Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition, receiving a Murdoch medal. The medal is awarded to the top 10 GPA students in the graduating year!
Joel loves keeping active and enjoys fishing from his Kayak.

Established in 2014, following the inaugural Fontan Education Day hosted by the Australian & New Zealand Fontan Registry, the ANZ Fontan Community (ANZFAC) goal is to foster connection, community and shared learning so that no one has to navigate life with a Fontan circulation alone. ANZFAC brings people together to share experiences, support one another, and ensures the voices of people with lived experience continue to help shape the work of the Fontan Registry and HeartKids Australia.

James was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) and underwent a fenestrated Fontan in 2005 at RCH.
James enjoys an active lifestyle including swimming, gym, hiking, jogging, and recently completed a half marathon in Hawaii with his wife Paige, where James walked and jogged.
James graduated from Curtin University in 2024 with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering and a Finance degree with Distinction.
James enjoys a great quality of life currently living overseas for work but looks forward to returning to Australia with his wife to settle in their first home.

Let's get to know our team... Say "Hello" to A/Prof Kate English. Kate is a Cardiologist who spent 20 years as a Consultant in the NHS. After emigrating to Australia in 2023, Kate is now Head of Adult Congenital Cardiology at the The Royal Melbourne Hospital. We welcome Kate to the Australian & New Zealand Fontan Registry Steering Committee!

DID YOU KNOW?
The Fontan procedure connects the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) to the pulmonary artery (PA) to allow the redirection of deoxygenated blood from the lower body to flow directly to the lungs, without passing through the pumping chamber of the heart- the ventricle. The Fontan Operation improves oxygenation and reduces the workload of the heart.
